One-eyed king

Which recently disgraced genius is tingling with excitement at an offer to help a fellow artist achieve redemption?

    James Morris as Wotan?

  • Pelleas says:

Is it possible for Julie Taymor to be tingling about ANYTHING this week?

  • The “One Eyed King” suggests Wotan.
Has Morris been called in to Coach Terfel?

John Galliano branches out into a new career as a costume designer and collaborates with David Hockney on a production of Parsifal somewhere?

Taymor helping LePage? Disgraced is a strong word and I don’t see how it fits Morris.

I think when the process of getting firing merits a series of Times features, that’s as close to a thorough “disgrace” as I can imagine. But in that case I’m stumped by “one-eyed.” Yes, a Ring reference, but Taymor has two eyes, and so does Lepage (even if he lacks hair).

That’s to point to Wotan, as you mention. Plus la cieca always makes some kind of glancing reference to the word ‘blind’ in the title of a blind item (‘In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king’ in this case).

  • Orlando Furioso says:

“Disgraced” is the tricky part here; the singers who’ve burned their bridges through excessive cancellation (and Morris is assuredly not in that category) aren’t likely to be called “geniuses.” I too would prefer someone who has actually been anointed as a genius with a MacArthur grant, but Julie Taymor is the individual who earned “disgrace” yesterday. So I’m guessing that she’s being asked to help with the Ring staging (and it does include a one-eyed king) somehow.

I still feel as if “tingling” should have a specific reference here too, and I’m stumped on that part.

      Orlando,

If indeed the “disgraced genius” in question is Julie Taymor (recently booted from her directorial duties in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), I would hazard that the “tingling” refers to one of Spider-Man’s oft-quoted catchphrases: “My spider-sense (or spidey-sense) is tingling.”

        Bingo. I’ll buy that.

Aaaaaahhhhh – erudition! We poor Brits (what’s the use of us, hey) were just thinking along the lines of “by the pricking of my thumbs”, but did we have the wrong author!

  • armerjacquino says:

Serves me right for laughing at some of the wilder guesses in the Wozzeck thread. I haven’t the first clue what’s going on here.

Charlie Sheen is giving Galiano PR advice.

  • LogeLizard says:

“Recently discraced genius” can only be Taymor, and “tingling” seems like a clear Spiderman reference. But I think “redemption” refers to an operatic plot-point rather than career status, i.e. Taymor is being asked to stage a DUTCHMAN (which I think she has done before) or PARSIFAL, etc., with a name artist in the lead.

I dreamt the other night that the Met had completely pulled the plug on its Ring cycle. See how reading Parterre has influenced my subconscious?

    • phoenix says:

COINCIDENCE! I had a similar dream, but in mine the Met just pulled the Ring off it’s Cycle and put it on the back burner of my kitchen stove!
