A hole in the head

nasalThis just in from the Met press office: “William Shimell will sing the role of Don Alfonso in Mozart’s Così fan tutte for all performances this season, replacing Wolfgang Holzmair who is suffering from a sinus infection.”  Mr. Holzmair’s sinus infection is apparently scheduled to linger through December 2.

  • The Vicar of John Wakefield says:

“Susanna is not as real as real people because Freni / Cotrubas / Mathis / Gueden / Moffo / Hagley / take your pick have made her so.”

Why was no mention made of Audrey Mildmay?

    • Quite right. Susanna has been the province of English sopranos since the days of the original, Nancy Storace. Mildmay had sorry pitch though. But There has been such a wealth of excellent British Susannas, like McLaughlin or Rodgers or Watson or Joshua, even Americans like Bonney or Donath or Battle.
