Twilight of the god?

rene_papeRené Pape has withdrawn from La Scala’s season-opening new production of Die Walküre, in what was to have been his role debut as Wotan. Vitalij Kowaljow will substitute.  Pape is still scheduled to sing this role at the Berlin Staatsoper in April 2011. It is not clear at this point if Pape’s decision was based on vocal issues or a very reasonable unwillingness to spend five hours of stage time cavorting with mimes.

    Phoenix,

Well put, and with class! Sorry for your walk.

oh don’t be sorry about that… i have been using the excuse that my legs are worn out from squats in order to be lazy & take the bus. truth of the matter is i should be walking ten times that distance every day, but i’d rather exercise than walk. Also i get a monthly bus pass so unconsciously i think i’ve got to get my greedy money’s worth & take the bus all the time, when in reality it’s time to get back to walking all over my side of town east of the Chenango River.
      – i’ve got no class over here, but i can recognize it when it comes around~ you are nice to comment with me.
      – What did you listen to/record today? While i was at the gym I had automatically in absentia recorded at home Macbeth from utah (good performance i thought but the sound didn’t come out up to par over here); Lohengrin (i’m just now gonna sit down & try to listen to it) & the Kiss (i’ll get to it later tonite)… the others that interested me: romeo et juliette from het Muziektheater & Pecheurs des Perles with Cabel i’ll get off archive later on during the week.
      – Sorry, but as good as those performances of early classical/baroque operas are, i don’t collect them; after all, as old as i am… believe it or not there are some things that were “before my time”.
