The elite meet?
La Cieca notes that the Gran Teatre del Liceu production of Carmen, directed by Calixto Bieito and starring Beatrice Uria-Monzon, Roberto Alagna, Marina Poplavskaya and Erwin Schrott, will be broadcast to cinemas a couple of weeks from now.
The live relay is at the rather inconvenient time of 2:00 pm on a Wednesday, but there apparently is a theater in Manhattan showing a replay on Sunday, October 17 at 7:00 pm. Your doyenne suggests that this film event might make an attractive meet-and-discuss for the local parterriani. Reactions, ideas and suggestion in the comments section, please, and if there seems to be sufficient interest, La Cieca will start the process of booking.
The production (with an alternate cast) is highly praised by Regie maven Opera Cake.
…are tickets really $25., FOR THIS……?
I’d loe to see it..but that seems rather steep, …nu?
Just about what it cost to see a movie in London.
In NYC mass-distribution movies are $12.50 to $25 depending on the vagaries of FX – i.e. IMAX 3D.
This is definitely a special event – the price is right.
Is this the same thing that’s also at Symphony Space on
Sun. Nov. 14 at 7? – I think it is. It’s $22 there; less for groups.
…that should have have read…”love”…..
What is it with Bieito and cars on stage?
I wish this Carmen was showing in the midwest. I think the Bieito treatment will work on this show.
Off topic, but worth mentioning, Toledo opera in OH will be webcasting their Ariadne this coming Wednesday 10/6 free of charge. Cieca, can we have a chat please, please please?

“What is it with Bieito and cars on stage?” His uncle is a used-car salesman of course.
Sorry.
Barbara Quintiliani has given some wonderful performances in Boston – Marie in the Daughter of the Regiment ( a stretch ) and if I remember correctly Lucrezia where she acquitted herself remarkably under the circumstances. I think she’ll make an interesting Ariadne.
I vote for a chat!
Did you catch him discarding the very full used condom?
I hope it didn’t land in the orchestra pit!
At least he was practicing “safe sex”. Anyway, I’m sure it was stage milk.
Thanks Lindoro. I’ll put the cast up on my schedule. Hope I remember to get it up at the right time on Wednesday.
Looks pretty god-awful.
The Carmen will be interesting, but if you really want to be sick to your operatic stomach, you should see the telecast of the AIDA on the Rhein from Basel. They took the cast from their Bieto production outdoors. It’s is very bizarre, Here is the ovation from the in house version of the Bieto AIDA. He appears onstage at 4:21
Actually, compare this:
and this…
You cannot judge the end result from these amateur videos
The deeply disturbing thing about this is that for people who have no idea who Verdi was, let alone Bach or Beethoven, must think this is either ludicrous or incredibly beautiful. Not worth the time it takes to reason it all out, but younger members might want to try.
Videos of this complete performance are embedded in the posting Skating on the Nile.
I remember seeing cars on a stage for a Carmen in Napoli in 1986.
I remember seeing Uria-Monzon’s Carmen @ the MET sometime in the last decade, in the new ZiaZef production. She had nice legs.
I remember seeing myself in a black brassiere, albeit not on a car.
Camille will pass on this one.
All of this nonsense is the fault of Peter Konwitschny.
Sign me up, doyenissimma
Quintiliani as Marie in La Fille du Regiment? Astonishing to contemplate, but no. In 2001, Tracy Dahl sang s lovely and spirited Marie in La Fille. Barbara Quintiliani sang a very satisfying Elvira in Ernani here, followed by her Lucrezia Borgia. The lady is a spinto and the real deal, not a light lyric. She des, however, have some very impressive agility to offer in those roles that require it. Perhaps, someday, Norma . . .
Quintiliani recently sang Norma for Chautauqua Opera:
