blind_thumbWhich opera company hopes to rise to the occasion of a major tour minus that diva who seems to have lost her way yet again?

The Met is scheduled to celebrate Levine’s 40th anniversary with the company during its tour of Japan next summer. My recollection is that Netrebko, Gheorghiu and Fleming were all to appear, but I may be wrong.

  • iltenoredigrazia says:

Just checked the Met’s Japanese web page. Neither Gheorghiu nor Fleming are listed. Main singers included are Netrebko, Frittoli, Damrau, Borodina, Kaufmann, Hvrostovsky and Pape. Not sure that any of these “divas” has lost his/her way in the past, thus not “again.” Now, if Levine were to cancel… Can he handle such a long flight?

  • Will says:

“Lost her way” translates into Italian as traviata so, given the singers listed by iltenoredigrazia, I assume it is Anna who went AWOL from the new Traviata production at the MET this coming season and is now lost again to the tour.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if it turned out to be Angela who replaced her?

  • iltenoredigrazia says:

Netrebko is listed for Boheme and not Traviata. Of course, Mimi is also “traviata.”

Was any major opera company planning a US tour for next year?

  • MontyNostry says:

Well, apparently Angela lost her way in the recent revival of La traviata at Covent Garden. After a first night which had the critics raving, it seems she pretty much lost interest and got worse each subsequent evening. She even dropped out of one of the later performances.

    • scifisci says:

That’s what has always bothered me about angela….she seems perfectly able of singing top-notch performances but for one reason or another, usually only a few performances of a run will be at that level. Of course singers are not robots, but with her there seems to be a deliberate attempt some nights to just give 50% or to be very non-committal. Really is a shame, because when she’s on, she’s ON, and reminds us all of why she became such a big star. Maybe if she had varied her rep more she wouldn’t get so bored and complacent? Her singing and musical style seems to be tending towards verismo (her recent Met traviatas demonstrate this), maybe the upcoming adrianas will be a triumph after all.

      • MontyNostry says:

Are her vocal guns big enough for Adriana, though — especially when pitted against Borodina?

        • scifisci says:

I think so…..after all, scotto sang it quite successfully opposite obratzova.

gheorghiu will really have to work hard to project the middle and bottom though.

Just pointing out that the Met is not the only “major opera company” in the world.

  • 79CXR says:

So is this to do with the Gheorghiu & Valenti Traviata in Japan in Sept as part of the Royal Opera tour. Or has Nebs pulled out of Manon?

    what does mousha mean?

…it seems that Bobby is back in favour?

This website is usually a giant encomium to La Gheorghiu with lots of complimentary reviews and pictures. Alagna had been eradicated from the “personal” photos, but…

Well, it sounds like a joke to me but I read an interview with Angela last year where she mentioned someone had written an opera called Draculette. And she was considering singing, “why not” or words to that effect.

Probably Angie subscribes to the view that there is no bad publicity.

She’s pretty resilient, and she’s taking what could be a joke on her and turns it around so that the joke’s on those that would try to take pot shots at her expense.
