More sodomy than “Cats!”

“…it’s a tribute to either their enthusiasm or their acting ability that they seem to be having fun”
And there’s Nina Stemme, telling today’s Times of London that she plays women having the worst day of their lives.
Broad church, opera. I’m sure there’ll be takers for both.
btw Salzburg has been leaking info regarding 2011:
FroSch with Thielemann, Schwanewilms, Herlitzius, Schuster, Gould, Koch. Production by Loy.
Macbeth conducted by Muti, Production Stein and Makropolous conducted by Pekka-Salonen Production Marthaler. No info on singers for the last two. The three Da Ponte operas as well are being revived. But the big event should be the FroSch.
Interesting that Marthaler is being welcomed back to Salzburg – he was one of Mortier’s favorites (recall the Nozze with the omnipresent electric keyboard player on stage).
With Thielmann taking over Dresden, we’ll hopefully see more collaborations between him and Schwanewilms, who sings a lot at the Semperoper. Also have to like the fact that the recent Munich Ortrud will be on stage with the recent Bayreuth Ortrud.
And I hope that the Macbeth ends up on DVD – I like the Met HD production on DVD but have had my fill of Ghoulish-Screama, frankly.
Well since the Frosch will be opening night I imagine that it will be shown on TV and also that a DVD will be made. I mean who could conduct it better than Thielemann today? His performances at the Met were magical and I am hoping that they will be uncut in Salzburg as well. As far as I know the only two performances of FroSch on DVD are both older ones (Sawallisch and Solti). I do wonder who Salzburg has cast as the Lady. Michel seems to be the Lady of choice but seems to be cast more for her acting abilities than anything else. I only heard her once while still a mezzo and that was almost 10 years ago so I cannot really comment on her voice now. Maybe Martina Serafin? Jennifer Wilson? I guess whoever sings it has to be approved by Muti.
Sylvie Valayre, perhaps, for the Lady?
Pardon me for being an idiot, but by “Frosch” do you in fact mean Die Frau ohne Schatten, and by “The Lady” do you in fact mean the Empress?
Or is there an opera of The Frog Prince I didn’t know about?
It’s not that I object to your shorthand, I’m just feeling a little disoriented.
Intermezzo says : Anne Schwanewilms sings her first Kaiserin, and the cast also includes Evelyn Herlitzius, Michaela Schuster, Stephen Gould and Wolfgang Koch
Sorry – just caught up with your shorthand. It’s the Lady Macbeth you are wondering about, I take it. And , LMM, Frosch is not the jailer in Fledermaus.
Apologies….
Muti uses Violeta Urmana a lot for dramatic Verdi. She sings Lady Macbeth. Don’t count her out!
So was this review already written when the suddenly useful “Frankly no worse than Measha” tag was penned?
Clever gal, our LaC.
Little Master: FroSch = FRau Ohne SCHatten. And the Lady is not the Empress or Kaiserin but Lady Macbeth. Sorry if I wasn’t clear on that. I hope that Valyre is not singing Lady. Is she still singing anyway? I don’t see her listed really anywhere.
…and our wires were crossed to add to the confusion.
Je suis désolée.
Is this the Lady you meant?

The number following the equal sign is the number of seconds into the clip you want it to begin.

dzi?ki bardzo!
*Wolfgang *Koch!
Glad that’s cleared up, I thought that Sophie Koch, pretty much a fraud in the big roles (Fricka!!!) she’s been singing, was tackling the Amme.
