What a drop dead gorgeous photo. Happy birthyday kid.

It is indeed a very pretty photograph of her. I have always thought that she could take up the mantle of Rise Stevens after she retires. Gracious and glamorous hostess and supporter of the MET.

She sings this song so beautifully – it really sends shivers… One of my top five recitals has to be one in which Ms Graham sang this, along with some other Hahn songs. She is one of those singers who can really communicate something special in the recital forum. Another who can do that is Mattila – an amazing all-round recitalist!

  • Happy Birthday,Susan. Loved you in Le Damnation de Faust.

Happy Birthday Susie! I love her A Chloris. And her Ned Rorem songs. And this too-hysterically funny:

  • A very Happy birthday indeed.

In unrelated news, Glyndebourne will be webcasting their Don Giovanni in about an hour. free of charge.

La Graham’s Dido in the Chatelet production on DVD is simply tremendous. And yes, she is a deeply rewarding recitalist, particularly convincing as a French mezzo. Heureux Anniversaire, belle Susan!

  • Buster says:

Happy Birthday, and thank you very much for all the beautiful moments you have given me.

She was the Rosenkavalier of my lifetime (with Eva Lind (yes, yes), the super-elegant, pre-Wagner Linda Watson, and Edo de Waart). Her song recitals were always events too, but I never heard her do anything better than that recital which included the Seven Early Songs of Berg. Her French song recital was wonderful also, with Dame de Monte Carlo as the finale. And always that gorgeous Hahn song as an encore. I traveled to Brussels to hear her in that for a second time last year. She was not as good as a couple of years ago, but still, an unforgettable night.

    Many Happy Returns!

I’ll let her buddies George and Laura Bush congratulate her, and keep my own thoughts to myself.

    • Alto says:

Isn’t she from their town? I cut her a little slack for hometown pride — though I wouldn’t be able to stand being in the same room with the man.

Susie G., on the other hand, I adore.

While Graham and Laura might be local friends (although, from what I understand…it is mainly a friendship between their FAMILIES/PARENTS….),,I have not heard anything to lead me to think she and “Shrub” are “buddies”

(Yeah…she did sing at the 2nd GWB Inaugaration….BUT…Artists do all sorts of things that I ain’t thrilled with, ….sometimes….lol!)

    HAPPY HAPPY B-DAY, MS. GRAHAM!!!

  • You know? I had never been impressed with Kate Royal, her Elvira is not bad….
