Why is a raven like a writing desk?

jack_brynNo, there never was an answer to that celebrated Lewis Carroll conundrum, but its inexplicability pales into insignificance next to the query sent in by loyal reader S.A.: why is Jack Black covering Bryn Terfel in the Met’s Ring?

    I CORVI

    Io sono quel che sono
Non faccio la vita che fai
Io vivo ai margini della città
    Non vivo come te

Io sono un poco di buono
    Lasciami in pace perché
    Sono un ragazzo di strada
E tu ti prendi gioco di me

Tu sei di un altro mondo
    Hai tutto quello che vuoi
    Conosco quel che vale
    Una ragazza come te

Io sono un poco di buono
    Lasciami in pace perché
    Sono un ragazzo di strada
E tu ti prendi gioco di me

Tu sei di un altro mondo
    Hai tutto quello che vuoi
    conosco quel che vale
    una ragazza come te

Io sono un poco di buono
    Lasciami in pace perché
    Sono un ragazzo di strada
E tu ti prendi gioco di me

    Sono un ragazzo di strada
    Si si si
    Ti prendi gioco di me

    There are two main possibilities.

The first is that there is a bass-baritone who happens to share the name of the actor.

The second I deduce from some inside information via a colleague. It is to my understanding, however I cannot attest to the complete validity of the following statements, that the new Ring production will be so difficult and dangerous that there will be a policy in effect that no performer will be allowed to enter the set if they have not sufficiently rehearsed on it. The word I have received is that the Met will employ the primary artists, alternate artists and, in the event either of those are indisposed, a series of actors/dancers who will also be familiar with the staging of their assigned character to walk the performances while the artist brought in will sing from the pit. It would follow a certain logic if Gelb were to employ actors from Hollywood to stand in for the major characters, perhaps to make up for the probably disappointment of the audience to have to witness a silent actor/dancer and a disembodied voice. The presence of a noted actor would thereby discourage audience members from scalping their tickets.

I can in no way corroborate or prove the above theories so I merely offer them based on evidence I have heard, but I cannot claim to have any personal inside knowledge about the affair.

I’m sorry, I can’t understand this post without the addition of half a dozen tangentially related youtube clips.

I don’t know. I get more ‘Fabio on a humid day’ from that shot. And he knows birds, too:
