I can see a part of where Manndryka is coming from . Madame Armfedt requires someone that can project ‘faded old world juicy -voice elegance’,The actual role is limited in size and must convey ‘that reflected disdain of the present’ from a sense of ‘ordered position’. Think the likes of the late Helen Traubel, think the late Anna Russell ( who actually did perform that role!) That is the style of Casting ‘choice’. I cannot start to imagine Elaine Strich’s croaky raspy voice doing the character any justice. Much as I love her other musical contributions over the years.
