Willis or won’t she?

futralIt’s official: Elizabeth Futral will sing the role of Ophélie in Washington National Opera’s production of Hamlet, replacing Diana Damrau who, according to the company’s press release,  “is pregnant with her first child [and] has been advised by her doctors to avoid strenuous activity and air travel, thus preventing her from being in Washington.”

I’m glad too – I hate to be one of those people who pooh-poohs an artist based on one clip. Having said that, if I were her I would track down the well-meaning poster of that clip and have it removed.

Mattila sang in Ballo in London as long ago as 2005.

CruzSF@20 — no apologies necessary, and 51% is generous in any case. Ann Midgette liked her performance and referred back to it in a review of Dessay’s Violetta in NM. As I said, I’m not sure I’d have spent the money on Hamlet, but it’s part of the package this season.

OT, but as propos $100. Can someone tell me if it makes sense to spend such an amount of money on a Kiri Te Kanawa concert? There will be one this year in my city, and I assume the price will be more less that; I’ve never seen her live and I’m curious, but I have no idea in what shape her voice currently is, so I’ll be grateful for some advice.

Liane, as you know I’m a sentimental old fool, but of Kiri Te Kanawa were to appear in my town for a farewell performance at a hundred bucks a pop, I’d go just to say thank you for the decades of pleasure she has given me. It wouldn’t matter if all she did was fart the Maori Farewell Song.

BAB, it’s probably what I’ll do; the only problem is that it’ll be the seventh or so high-profile (and expensive) concert this year, and I’m not exactly made of money…

    Liana: she sang it herself:

my voice is but a breath
    that tomorrow is no more.

Where’s the “Tyke, ya know” tag?
