Alla cantata ancor manca la diva

racette_toscaPatricia Racette will sing the title role in Puccini’s Tosca on April 14, 17, 20, and 24 matinee, replacing Karita Mattila, “who is ill” — this just in from the Met’s press office.

Unless the illness is catastrophic, most of us ordinary mortals could expect to recover by two weeks and a day….hmmm….

  • Clita del Toro says:

Cieca–a few weeks ago I posted that a friend of mine from NYC heard through the grapevine that Mattila would NOT sing the Toscas. I asked you about it at that time. No answer.

I guess my friend was right.

While I am sympathetic toward indisposed singers, the “replacing xyz who is ill” seems to be becoming an all-too frequently provided excuse.

Also from a contractual perspective, would this effectively preclude a performer from singing anywhere else during the time announced? Would be highly suspect if a singer were announced as being ill in one house only to show up singing at another.

Exactly- most common illnesses would not require so much prophylactic cancellation.

What does Mattila care??She’s already done the telecast…and she knows that Kaufmann and Terfel will be the “stars” of the evening. Probably better she cancel…especially since she really isn’t up to it “vocally”.

    “Dyke, ya know.”

Will Uusitalo and/or Voigt be “ill’ for FLYING DUTCHMAN is my question.

  • iltenoredigrazia says:

That is my question too, Nerva. I’ll be in NY that week and wonder who I’ll actually get to see and hear. Racette for Mattila. Will Terfel show up for Scarpia? Will Gheorghiu show up for her last Traviata of the season? Uusitalo and/or Voigt?

  • peter says:

Do you really want Voigt to show up for the Dutchman?

That is not entirely accurate. Any singer will tell you that even after the worst of a, say, a cold is gone, the effects on your vocal folds are felt for a while and it could take sometimes up to a month to feel completely recuperated.

Remember, while most of us who work on a desk use our fingers to work (and fingers take a lot sooner to recover from certain alignments), singers depend on 2 1-inch folds that need optimal conditions to work at 100%.

Now, it would be interesting to know if it is true that she is ill or if she is sick of the production and all the unnecessary hatred towards it and does not want to bother Zeffa’s black widows.
