Come Meoni al brando

Photo: Ken Howard/Metropolitan OperaThis just in from the Met press office: “Giovanni Meoni will sing the role of Ezio in Verdi’s Attila on February 27, March 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 19, replacing Carlos Alvarez, who is ill.” (Photo: Ken Howard/Metropolitan Opera)

UPDATED: Note the correction above, i.e., Meoni is currently announced only for the performances to be conducted by Riccardo Muti; “TBA” is on for the three evenings to be conducted by Fabio Marco Armiliato. (That will change soon enough, sadly.)

I think its Marco Armiliato instead of Fabio Armiliato

  • flamingopera says:

On the Met’s website, the 3 Armiliato peroformances are TBA for Ezio.

  • pernille says:

I went to the Met’s website and discovered that Bruce Ford has dropped out of the Armida I was/am going to see- Anyone know anything about this? The tenors are the crucial part of this opera and this is sad news.

  • Lucky Pierre says:

do they really need 6 tenors for that ? they can double some of those roles? in recordings, there are as few as 4 tenors, no?

    • CruzSF says:

Do all the tenors ever appear on stage at the same time?

      • Lucky Pierre says:

that’s my question. i have listened to the recordings (callas, deutekom and renaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay) but i don’t recall wh0o’s who and when do they appear. who can keep track of 7 tenors? it’s like herding cats.

      • javier says:

Technically, they don’t all appear together at the same time. But most of them are on stage with her. Rossini worked it out so that one tenor could sing two different roles because there are two tenors who never appear in the same scenes (Gernando and Carlo). I guess that makes the tenor roles easier to cast, but only by a hair.

        • javier says:

This video with Anderson is probably better in case you hate Renaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, but also because you get a better look at the tenors on stage. But some of them are just extra chorus guys.

    • pernille says:

      They need 3 “killer” tenors

( sorry I’ll learn how to embed eventually)
The clip shows why not having Ford will be a loss.

      • Lucky Pierre says:

pernille, you just add a v to the http (httpv:).

actually, i like this one better (also with ford):

the poster, lindororossini, provides great info with his posts on belcanto.

        • pernille says:

          Thanks for the tip.
Indeed the clip you offered is better. I have a weakness for the one I posted because of the video. They “just” stand there and sing and it’s thrilling.

    • quoth the maven says:

Three of the tenors appear only in the first act; two only in the third. In the opera’s premiere, those roles were doubled.

      • CruzSF says:

That answers that question. Except we don’t know what kind of staging has been devised for this production. Maybe all 6 tenors are always on stage, like the Nicklausse in the current Hoffman.

  • Lucky Pierre says:

did anyone go to borodina last night? i stayed home to watch figure skating at the olympics (sad, i know, but i did enjoy it a lot).

  • Lucky Pierre says:

grazie, javi, i have seen those before. la anderson was pretty good in this role.

on another topic, do people know the following cast?

    Sieglinde – Susan B. Anthony

    Siegmund – Kip Wilborn

    Wotan – Jake Gardner

    Brünnhilde – Lori Phillips

    Hunding – John Marcus Bindel

    Fricka – Mary Phillips

i’ve heard of lori p. but can’t find much on youtube. a friend just attended this walkuere in honolulu and they were very impressed by the singers.

    • kashania says:

Pierre: I like Mary Phillips. She sang the Rheingold Frick in Toronto (subbing for Judith Nemeth who was ill) and while I don’t really remember her in that role, I recall an exciting Eboli a couple of years later.

  • javier says:

You find the craziest stuff on youtube. I can’t believe this:

  • dorion says:

can’t Domingo sing all the 7 tenor roles?

how’s his recovery? Marta I’m sure is happy he’s in the hospital, at least he can’t chase. Though I’m sure the nurses are busy auditioning.

Yeghishe Manucharyan is schedule to be in this, all jokes aside he’s the real deal, Gelb should give him the Ford role.

  • justanothertenor says:

I think they have already found a replacement: John Osborn!

  • pernille says:

Yeghishe Manucharyan appeared in Boston’s Tancredi this fall, and was rather disappointing. I think his voice is too small for the Met – it certainly seemed too small for the theater in Boston.

    • dorion says:

nonsense, Manucharyan is as powerful as Florez with a heftier sound. He’ll be great, a unique sound. I’m sad for Ford though, never heard him live but own several recordings. I was looking forward to the experience, he’s a bel canto hero in Europe.

    • CruzSF says:

Right, pernille. How can you judge his voice? You were only there during his performance.

      • pernille says:

Good point, CruzSF, twice even. Once in the balcony and once almost close enough to have the dying Tancredi ( Podles) fall in my lap!
