Something unspoken

A brace of profiles in the March issue of Opera News engage the reader in a fascinating game of “the same, but different.” Simon Keenlyside and Paulo Szot are both baritones; both handsome, sexy men; and they’re both adept in classical and more modern musical theater forms. Both gentlemen are starring in new productions at the Met this spring, too. So… what is it that sets these two fellows apart?
Mr. Keenlyside, we learn, is “a family man now, having married Royal Ballet principal dancer Zenaida Yanowsky in 2006. Their son turned one year old last fall, and another child is on the way.”
Alas, poor Mr. Szot has never had any sort of personal relationship in his entire life — or at least none that the overwhelmingly homosexual Opera News editorial staff deems acceptable enough to mention.
No, don’t bother to check your calendar. It’s 2010.
Schrott-Szot Tot bigamously weds Felicity Lott and Catherine Bott.
By the way, Opera News seemed to make a particular point of talking about both Racette’s and Pieczonka’s relationships in recent interviews — and a while ago in the interview with Jill Grove too. Or maybe the interviewees made a point of it.
. . . and their offspring unwisely follows a family calling. “Schrott-Szot-Lott-Bott Tot in not hot Tote Stadt”
… and let’s just leave Paul Potts out of this.
Felicity Lott sautees trotters for Schrott and Szot, oh Gott!
This criticism of Opera News is without merit.
Not only has the publication previously acknowledged interview subjects’ same sex partners, it has also on many occasions *not* mentioned the opposite sex partners of heterosexual interview subjects.
Space considerations along with the publication’s mission must be taken into account. It is “Opera News,” not “Boyfriend and Girlfriend News.”
Has anyone considered the possibility that Szot did not mention his relationship during the interview for his own reasons, or perhaps that he and his partner have split up and he is currently single? Or maybe event that it was mentioned, but got cut out for spacial reasons.
He is not single and has been with the same man for many years.
