Housekeeping: the art of conversation

beckett_playLa Cieca has heard a few complaints that the “threaded” comments format (you know, “2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.2.1,” etc.) can be difficult to untangle for occasional visitors. While we’re not quite up to unthreading the comments, we do want to keep the cher public happy. So what do you think about the following options for keeping you up to date on the parterre conversation?

A “subscribe to comments” option for each posting. That way each time a new comment was entered for a given posting, you’d receive an email alerting you. Note that in busy conversations like the recent “Abreast of the season,” that would mean you might receive a hundred or more emails in a day if you subscribed to that thread.

… or,

A “notify of reply” option for each comment. The way this works is, you enter a comment, and you are given the choice whether you want to be informed when there is a direct reply.  Note that, if people reply to other comments on the thread, you would not be informed.

Both of these would be “opt-in,” so if you are happy or at least indifferent to the way the comments are displaying currently, you wouldn’t have to do anything. If you do want to be notified, you would need to be sure that the email address given in on your profile page is correct and up to date.

Notify of Reply which seems to be similar to the old format.

  • Ercole Farnese says:

I would try “notify of reply”. Also, Cieca car, it would be cute if members could have the possibility to have their little picture, or an avatar, like in Facebook.

Thanks for the Maria! Of course I have the DVD and have seen that ‘Non piu mesta’ a million times, but never before under the influence of Bowmore from Islay :) , that was wonderful.

As to the question here, I don’t see how notify of reply could hurt. I sometimes wonder if a lovely poster has replied to me and perhaps I would never know as I forget what I posted and where. Whatever La Cieca decides it will be the best. La Cieca is very wise.

what about if the newer comments are in colour and the older ones we have already read in black. Would that work?

      • Liana says:

Or different colours for comments from various days?

      • Nerva Nelli says:

How about brilliant colors for comments about outstanding Munich- and Vienna-based artists, and dull gray tones for complaining about Americans and other utility singers?

        • Liana says:

Actually, complaining comments on this site are waaay more elaborate (and interesting :-) ), so perhaps the other (colourful) way round?

Would the “Subscribe to Comments” e-mail actually include the new comment (or a link directly to the comment)? Or would one still have to scroll up and down through the whole thread trying to find each one?

Just asking, since I can’t really imagine wanting to deal with e-mails in any case, but, as an addict of reading this site, the fact is that it has become even more time-consuming (if not effectively impossible) trying to keep up with new comments under the current system. When new comments were all at the end of the thread, it was easy to just find the last one that looked familiar, and take it from there.

I like to be able to flounce in and out and get a good gist of “what’s occurring”. I would have to finger through each post as I do not want email notification. The current system is ok(ish), but I would prefer the old system, where if I want to reply to a particular message I just add the number or the screen name of the poster, this current one 1.1.2 etc is like reading a book and having to go back to page 2 again, to keep up what is going on.

Only my view, whatever you decide La C, I will continue to read in what ever format you deem fit.

  • Sanford says:

79CXR, I would like to experience your flouncing and fingering. How do I make a reservation for that?

  • 79CXR says:

Sanford: I will be in the Belmont Room tomorrow evening, Pre and 1st interval for SB. I will endeavour to accommodate you.

  • La Cieca says:

Let’s try the “Notify me of follow-up comments via e-mail” selection for a while and see how that works. (It appears just above the “Submit Comment” button when you are entering a reply.) If you don’t check the box, you won’t get any extra emails, don’t worry.

As a daily (and more often) reader of comments, I find it easier to follow discussions with the threading, but if there’s a strong sense against it, then we can try to find another way to organize.

I still say this would be fixed by getting rid of the tabbed comments and installing a quote function. That way individual conversations could continue, but all posts would appear in order of posting. The current tab system doesn’t work well anyway, as it has a limited number of possible replies to a post anyway – then forcing the conversation to fragment off down the page.
