And the Regie you rode in on

regie_01_03_01La Cieca admits the Regie quiz candidate from a couple of weeks ago was something of a ringer as it was a new work, and a children’s opera at that. So it’s only reasonable that none of you guessed it was Antonia und der Reißteufel, as performed at the Vienna Volksoper. (Duh!)

Our quiz topic this time around is part of the standard repertoire, though you might not guess it from the photos! (As always, cher public, guesses only: if you recognize the production, please keep quiet!)

    Puccini’s Manon Lescaut !

    1. Des Grieux and Manon plot to steal the coach and rush off to Paris.

    2. Manon and the other bad girls get ready to sail to Louisiana, while des Grieux pleads to go with them.

    3. Manon dies while des Grieux watches…along with a bunch of distracting supers.

  • My first thought was Nabucco, my 2nd thought was how much i would have liked for that gold paint to be lickable.

  • My 3rd thought was Rode thus Ride of the Walkures and Walkure

    Otello.

That’s Iago on the horse and the woman with the improbably black hair is Desdemona.

  • Baritenor says:

    Gotta be Norma.

  • Hans Lick says:

    Walkuere.

    1. Brunnhilde pushes Grane and Sieglinde offstage in Act II.

    2. Slightly later, Sieglinde reproaches Brunnhilde for having done this while the valkyries look on.

    3. In Act I, Sieglinde recalls, for Siegmund’s benefit, the nightmarish tale of her wedding to Hunding and all his greedy relations.

    So I’m guessing Rake’s Progress.

P.S. La Cieca! You DID promise no more weird rep! Only items we might well have heard of and, indeed, heard. That last one was UNFAIR.

It looks Norma-ish to me, too… so it must be Semiramide.
