No word from Carmencita
That invited audience for last night’s dress rehearsal of Carmen at the Met must still be under house arrest, for nary a peep has reached the ear of your doyenne.
On the bright side, there was a snippet of video smuggled out of a rehearsal of the upcoming Attila, and La Cieca is happy to share it with you.
“…without a perfromance on the stage, no production means anything.” Any English professor will rate this statement as contradictory, meaningless, vacuous and incoherent wording. It could have made some semce if the epithet “good” or “decent” had preceeded the word “performance.”
Dear Fidelio, I hope you learn how to spell names correctly in the coming year, and that you don’t continue to embarrass yourself with such peurile posts as 10.1.2.
Girls…
We can be witty, even barbed without going for another poster’s throat (or crotch or intellect).
Maybe I was too hard on Fidelio re: misspellings, but last week’s post about Voight vs. Voigt was fresh in my mind. Something about Voight being the Midnight Cowboy you cruise in the bathroom after the opera and Voigt being the soprano.
Anyway, I wish for 2010 that all of us, moi included, would forebear from having at other posters, whether they be on Parterre Box or All That Chat. If someone absolutely needs savage another poster, go to Dealbreaker and smite the Wall Street homophobes.
Well I promise never to post late at night after working all day and sitting through a very exciting 4 hour opera that I really enjoyed.Cause while you’re trying to suck the fun out of this site…….. I’ll will still be spelling some names incorrectly, but I will still be having FUN.
And if I am puerile, than I’m probably too young to be embarrassed so easily.
Ciao bella!
Again: “puerile”…
“’…without a performance on the stage, no production means anything.’ Any English professor will rate this statement as contradictory, meaningless, vacuous and incoherent wording.”
Actually, Mr.Pappas, to those of us who work in theater and opera, the statement makes perfect sense. There are times when energy levels are low on stage, performers aren’t connecting with each other or the audience and nothing anybody does seems able to kick start the thing. At such moments the phrase “there’s no performance going on on stage” is apt, and likely to be heard. And if there’s no performance going on, the production has no meaning.
I’d have to disagree – there’s always “some” performance going on, onstage. It may often be a poor one, but there’s definitely performing.
And before you try to hit me with the “those of us who work in theater and opera” line – I’ve done over 90 productions since 1987….ranging from “Turandot” to “Jesus Christ Superstar.” I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard that phrase.
Perhaps – “if the performance onstage is weak, the production doesn’t matter.” would be more appropriate.
figaroindy, I have no intention of hitting you with anything, I wasn’t even responding to one of your comments but to one by Mr. Pappas. If my theatrical experiences are not the same as yours, I fail to see the problem–it’s a big profession.
this is too funny…..thank you
