That’s one thing I sure miss in today’s performances. Rarely are singers allowed to hold on to a good high note. Or perhaps most singers today are just not able to hold high notes long? It stops the musical line but, boy, they sure make the performance exciting. I myself continue to be a strong believer in “if you have it, flaunt it.”

The only example of this I could find. Perhaps not Sills’ most perfect High “D” ever. It’s still effective and a different purpose for a high note…not to express anger, love, joy, victory, or resolve, but to express grief and defeat.
You know that high D was spliced in either from a different performance either in the run or elsewhere? Look at her stomach and see how the tension releases long before the note ends…
I dunno about that..maybe something in that oppressive costume snapped! Probably her best rendition of this aria is on the long out-of-print Bellini and Donizetti heroines album. Someday I’m going to buy a new turntable so I can transfer it to something modern.
Trust me on that one. The high D we hear in the clip and the one she sings in the video are 2 different things. Her body language is clear indication.
