Woolfe whistle
La Cieca’s old, old, old friend Zachary Woolfe will take to the airwaves tomorrow morning to discuss, among other less titillating topics, the controversial omission of pastied boobage from the Met’s impending HD of Les Contes d’Hoffmann. You can hear Zack on WQXR’s Arts File at 8:30am, on 105.9FM or wqxr.org.
I’d like to hear this but it’ll be a challenge for me to wake up at 5:30 my time to catch it. I hope it’s archived on the site afterward. BTW, I like “pastiegate.”
Actually heard this on the clock radio at wakeup time. It is archived at http://www.wqxr.org/articles/wqxr-news/2009/dec/11/wqxrs-arts-file-hoffman/
Reporter Kerry Nolan (once past her initial misuse of “begs the question”) reads a statement from the Met announcing a “compromise”: “Because the Met’s Live in HD programs are not rated by the Motion Picture Association of America, they cannot include R-rated content. [??] However, there will be no changes to the staging of the Tales of Hoffmann on Dec. 19 which will be seen live in HD. The transmission shown in movie theaters will include the same dancers and supers who usually appear partially nude but for this performance they’ll be wearing sheer body stockings.”
Bless you, mpa.
Now I KNOW I’ve seen naked bewbs in PG movies before. What’s changed?
Here’s an interesting comment posted by someone on the New York Observer’s website: http://tinyurl.com/ycscb8q
Schlock on stage
Submitted by new opera lover on Wed, 12/09/2009 – 08:30.
Yet another Peter Gelb concept production that is high on concept and thin on what it delivers. It is becoming quite apparent that this administration is more focused on what is sent to the movie theater more than what happens on the stage of that great opera house. It is quite a pity that the focus of one of the world’s great opera companies is no longer on the live performance. Watch out Mr. Gelb, people are getting tired of the junk food and crap you are serving up and wanting more substance.
