Definitely – she has Portuguese accent! I never knew if she was for real. For years, I thought that this was a hoax. Florence Foster Jenkins has lost a great deal of interest for me since I first heard the truly incomparable Natália de Andrade.

Pendatchanska’s career is a puzzlement. The NYCO Ermione was truly superb–the follow-up there of Donna del Lago was less successful as its music didn’t seem to lie well for voice and the character was perhaps too placid. For some reason Rene Jacobs seems to be the only conductor interested in her. I heard her as both Vitellia and Donna Elvira under his baton in Paris, and she was predictably fiery and memorable. She has also recently sung in Gassmann’s L’opera seria and Haydn’s Orlando Paladino with Jacobs, and her next big engagement is in the title role of a new production of Handel’s Agrippina (again with Jacobs) at the Berlin Staatsoper in Febrary.

She is indeed unbelievable. Seems like she knows it too, her website says she is “La Pendatchanska.” She sang in Roberto Devereux in Dallas recently. She sang something in Toronto, too, I think. Not sure why she doesn’t come to the U.S. more.

The “Vissi d’arte” CD wore out because there’s a FANTASTIC moment on the high Bb “signor…” where you can literally hear the voice just blow out under the pressure…I played it over and over!

And besides, she did have a career and a very nice voice when she was younger. However, she had some sort of mental disorder and it got worst when once, sleeping with her mother, she found her dead by her side in the morning.

Love Natalia – have for years! Live footage is just fantastic!

I had a recording of her doing “Vissi d’arte,” but the CD became unplayable (I played it a lot!)….can’t find a recording of it to replace it now….anyone lucky enough to have that one still? It’s not on the collections with most of her stuff….sadly!

Quiet as it is kept, she is one of my most favorite…errm…artists out there. The fact that there is live footage of her “singing” has been the greatest Christmas present ever!! It’s a Christmas miracle! I have always said (although this particular rendition doesn’t quite demonstrate) that had she actually been properly trained, she would have been one of the greatest performers. If you listen to her CD and manage to get past the actual affronted sounds, interpretively she is one of the most emotionally charged performers. One need only hear her “Voi lo sapete” or “Ecco l’orrido in campo” or “Ritorna vincitor” to understand. Truly, I implore you to listen beyond what is at once apparent.
