NY Times: “Greeks Condemn Opera of Elektra”

GREECE-PROTEST/“I knew Hofmannsthal… he in fact begged me not to go and see it… telling me he was ashamed of it!”

Will riot police converge tonight on Lincoln Center Plaza to prevent a reenactment of what happened 99 years ago?

Mme. Doria? Another Mme. Doria, I did not know she existed, Augusta Klousy. Who knows more? But thanks a lot for this. Wonderful.

Only a genius like La Cieca can unearth information this old that is connectrd to the present. Bravo! Greeks-and being one-are fanatically propritary when it comes to their culture, literture, and theatrical history and artistic traditions. After all, Greek theater inspired the genesis of opera. Still, I’m looking forward to the Met’s Electa tonight on Sirius!

I’ll be there tonight. I’m taking pepper spray.

For a compilation of all the tributes, from around the world, for “The Elektra of the Century” for whom tonight’s performance is dedicated, see:

Marshie, thanks for the link -- I’ve enjoyed spending the afternoon at work reading the tributes. I’d love to get in touch sometime and do some chatting about Behrens.

I’m heading out to the Met this evening with mixed feelings. Having just watched the 94 telecast on shitty vhs a couple of days ago I’m feeling wistful but pumped for Bullock. I hope it’s great.

If it’s not I’ll just get fucked up afterward. Win/win.

Yes Salomanda, I’d love to meet sometime, I’ll be on vacation the last two weeks of the year in NYC, so maybe we can meet for coffee. I also do have the Elektra on DVD in spectacular sound, maybe we can arrange a viewing.
I hope you enjoy tonight, I should have been there but I am home with the flu.

        • Salomanda says:

Oh that would be wonderful. I’m around aside from a trip to San Francisco for NYE. I ended up missing tonight due to a puppy emergency (never own an afghan hound, it’s always something) but we have tickets for 12/26 as well so I’ll catch it then. If you’d like you can reach me at Salomanda at gmail dot com.

I can still drink though, and I just got Behrens’ Montpelier Elektra so I’ll console myself with that. Feel better!

  • Oh, WOW! Some priceless translations on Behren’s tribute site.

    Some juicy examples :

Title: TWILIGHT OF THE GODS / Opera with a prologue and 3 lifts / total intake / onset of Brünnhilde’s final scene

Soloist / Soloist: Hildegard Behrens / Wotan / Soprano

Title: Die Walkure: from the death of preaching Brünnhilde-Siegmund/II

Title: 12 Odious! Where are you off to? What are you doing in bad Grimme ?…, Come on, hoping to let the last star of the weary not blanch / Rez.u. Leonore’s aria

Title: Der Freischütz / Opera in 3 acts / total recording /
    Title: 11 How? What? Horror! / Trio Annie-Agathe-Max “
