Pumping irony
Which complex new staging has the Met crew jumping through hoops? The resulting backstage congestion may result in the draft of an estranged director for a comeback!

Carmen and Zeffirelli?!?!
“Congestion” has me thinking The Nose. But that’s probably just my sinuses talking.
Could the “pumping” be referring to Miuccia Prada (as in pumps)? And maybe “hoops” refers to Pierre Audi? Then it must be Attila.
Ooh, and “draft” could mean Zeffirelli! But I do like Pelleas’ “congestion” theory…
Boy do I have too much time on my hands…
I always forget that every word of La Cieca’s hint may be a clue itself.
You mean that Fabrizio Melano will come to the rescue?
Doesn’t Graham Vick have Shostakovich experience???
Ooooo, isn’t Vick’s Vapor Rub meant to cure congestion? Or am I overthinking?
But I hope it’s Graham Vick, that would be awesome! And indeed, he did the Met’s Lady M but I think is on the outs for that Trovatore.
Met-wise, I think Gelb needs to reach out more to experienced opera directors like Vick who haven’t worked at the Met or haven’t recently. Fewer productions by theater or film directors who don’t show any understanding of opera and more by Lehnhoff, Loy, Pountney, Carsen, etc. He’s already doing a similar thing with conductors, why not directors too?
Just a note that “The Nose” and “Attila” are playing concurrently at the Met in March 2010. So the hoops of “Attila” might cause congestion for “The Nose”.
Cher public, you are too subtle for me. What are the hoops of Attila? (Unless we are referring to Mme. Urmana’s coloratura.)
I, like Pavel, thought the hoops might refer to Pierre Audi since the automaker’s logo is a set of four hoops. My compliments as always on your blind items!
Hoops? Sounds like a circus … But the Bartered Bride and Pagliacci aren’t on at the Met this season … Or is it just Carmen’s earrings?

At least I see that Atilla is now officially on the broadcast schedule on the Met Web site.
Congestion would appear to indicate The Nose..and draft IS very close to breeze “Zefiretti” However, the thought of FZ taking over that production just doesn’t ring true.
Other estranged directors….hmmm…Dr. Jonathan Miller. I bet an opera like The Nose would be “like mother’s milk” to him.
You’re right. Despite my earlier guess, I think that Gelb would hire anyone but Zeffirelli at this point, even if he thought that Franco were perfect for the job.
I think that Mr. Gelb, being the fucking genius he is, would LOVE the headline of “Zeffirelli back at Met after Tosca row”. What’s better than the unexpected?
I’ll write his quote for the Times now: “I’ve never had anything against Mr. Zeffirelli and his work. I think he has a place in the Met for generations to come, and I’m so happy to be working with him again. We simply cannot keep things stagnant here all the time, and we cannot have the same directors and designers doing all our shows. I’m happy to have branched out, but I’m even happier that we can still have Franco as an integral part the Metropolitan family.”
It’s a move straight out of “The Usual Suspects”
circus brings lepage to mind…
and hoops bring rings to mind
