How scrumptious. Now here's an related idea for sensational new opera stagings: have Die Walkure sung while on stage do a regie version of Il Trovatore or just about anything else. That would really be new and exciting. I can't wait. One opera sung, another staged so that nobody can figure out what it is. Glory be.

This is Wenarto redux. What a privilege it is to witness a consummate artist at the very top of their game! Never afraid to darken the tone or go for an "ugly" sound in the service of the composer's intentions, Wenarto inhabits the role like none before or since. An essential addition to any library.

PS Where did Wenarto find an orchestral track for Vissi d'arte that fits in so well with the Callas video? Or did he do something very clever with the audio from that video? The man is a production genius. Move over, Legge and Culshaw.

Wenarto is rare among current-day singers in that, like Callas, his timbre is immediately recognisable. He has a unique vocal fingerprint.

Renee is mouthing 'Sempre libera', but Ms Holliday on the soundtrack is belting out that she doesn't want to be free. Is that a bit of Regie-style ironic commentary? A Verfremdungseffekt, even?

I love, love, love Wagner in Italian. No Ring operas (when RAI broadcast the Ring in the fifties it was with Furtwangler two times and with German casts including Modl and Flagstad).

Here is a short list:
1) Parsifal with Callas and Christoff
2) I Maestri Cantori with Taddei, Rizzoli, Christoff and Capecchi
3) Tannhauser with Tebaldi and Beirer (on Hardy)
4) Lohengrin with Tebaldi, Nicolai, Penno (on Hardy)
5) Lohengrin with Pobbe, Konya and Didier Gambaradella
6) There are three "Vascello Fantasma"s out there one with Boyer and Zeani, one with Taddei and Gulin and another with Protti and Dorothy Dow.

The probably defunct International Record Collector's Club Society (IRCC CD819) put out a disc called "Wagnerismo" which had a lot of goodies on it.

If you want Ring excerpts in Italian check out Wotan's Farewell with Nazzareno de Angelis and the recordings of Edoardo Ferrari-Fontana and Giuseppe Borgatti for the tenor music. Lots of Lohengrin in Italian including the soundtrack to an old dubbed Italian movie with Prandelli and Tebaldi. Acoustics with De Lucia and Huguet in the Bridal Chamber duet.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say there has to be, because there was a lot of Wagner in Italian in Italy through at least the 1950s. The Callas Parsifal is perhaps the most famous, but I also have a fine Maestri Cantori di Norimberga under von Matacic from 1962. There is Italian Wagner from Naples, some of it in mixed Italian/German (Tannhauser) but others in all Italian. If you have any contacts in Italy or can find any Italian sites, I think you'd eventually track one down.
