That recital was very accomplished. I remember well the “Ich hab in Penna”, done excellently well, and that beautiful Verdi canzone, which sounds like “Tacea la notte”, in part. Everyone started to swoon at that sound.

I’m afraid this time it sounds more like a revival than a recital, but I wish Aprile well, and hope she will continue on.

I heard Aprile in a recital in Berkeley over 20 years ago, and she sang Danny Boy then too… is it a “signature tune” for her, something she always ends with? Backstage after the performance she was complaining mightily about how her hairspray had messed up her voice the whole evening, but we didn’t notice anything wrong at all.

“Danny Boy” was Schwarzkopf’s last encore in her farewell recital in 1975.

Her posture. Her facial expression. The look in her eyes. All unforgettable. Although I had heard the song many many times in many interpretations (from good to horrific) this was the first time I ever really understood it’s meaning.. And I’ll never forget it. E.S. I will alwys love you.

Oh, I forgot to mention. Last night, just before Millo’s recital, I saw Guleghina with her hubby in Time Warner Building’s shopping area. She looked good.
