I think jrance was implying that the clip, due to it’s vintage, is no longer relevant and that she is indeed a has-been. This was my interpretation of his statement.

I don’t know if Millo was taken for granted in the 80s and 90s. She was constantly referred to as the next great Verdi soprano. During her 7-8 years at the top, she was a big star, especially at the Met.

I’m such a Millo fan – I got a great report via e-amil from a friend who went to the recital. I hope Gelb was listening – if even through some Met employee – it’s time for some authentic Italian performances at the Met. Aprile was so taken for granted in the 80s and 90s – I guess to close to the careers of Tebaldi and Price to be appreciated for her own, enormous talents, rather than suffer from comparison to her recent predecessors. Today, such Verdi singing would be heralded as a new golden age. Voigt in the centennial “Fanciulla”…

Fabiano had a hit in London at English National Opera in Rigoletto. I didn’t see him (Verdi in English? Jonathan Miller’s ancient Mob production?) but heard good reports.

What duet was it from Trovatore? Soprano and tenor don’t really have much of a duet, do they, apart from that tiny one before they’re due to get married? Unless she moved to mezzo and they did ‘Ai nostri monti’.

Happened upon this last night…My god, what glorious singing! Millo is absolutely stunning in this scene. Has anyone sung it better? The ethereal pianissimi, the fabulous sense of Verdian line, and the delicious Italian diction--just transcendent.
Those who claim her to be a hack are just not LISTENING.

From where I sat in a box, she looked stunning. And she sounded wonderful. If there were any doubts about whether she could still sing, I hope their shattered. She moved from one strength to another. The Italian songs were lovely, the rachmaninov was lovely. She saved the best for last, though. Fanciulla, L’altra notte in fondere, ZaZa, the duet from Trovatore. Pretty terrific singing. But then she sang Danny Boy with harp accompaniment. Simple, honest, heartfelt, and I cried.

She had a huge success tonight, People may quibble over a few vocal details, but no one can argue with the fact that she was a hit. She was incredibly human and honest, often hysterically funny, and gave sincere performances, pulling all the stops out in the L’altra notte and receiving a standing ovation. It was a great exciting evening. Brava Aprile

Well, given that there are 12 (!) other people listed as participating–two pianists, a violinist, a cellist, a harpist, a tenor, a baritone, 4 dancers and an accordionist (!!), perhaps no one will notice if Millo herself doesn’t show up?
