No doubt somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the old Bruno Walter-led performance of Walkure Act 1 with Lehmann, Melchior and (List?) date from around 1932? It's magnificent, and still available, I believe.

Has Christophe Rousset's recording of Manuel Garcia's Il Califo di Bagdad on Archiv been generally released in the US? Apparently, in Europe it's only being issued in France and Spain....singers include Manuel Jose Zapata, Manuela Custer and Emiliano Gonzalo Toro.

also avail. on this series from Hänssler is the wonderful Meistersinger Act III, the first complete act of a Wagner opera ever put on Disc, by Böhm, in 1937. It was done on 78s but the sound was really excellent, and the remaster competes with the better recordings to come out of the 1940s. Great singing, too. Buy.

".....not the obscure Spanish opera I had ordered online the week before."

This wouldn't have been the Domènec Terradellas "Artaserse" from RCOC Records with Anna Maria Panzarella, Sunhae Im, Augustín Prunell-Friend and conducted by Juan Bautista Otero, would it? Because if such was the case, and you've still not heard this opera, you're in for a great treat.

Highly recommended.

kadence: Your comment of receiving a CD......'from an unknown label'. I find a little personally intriguing, to me. Hanssler is a record label I have been familiar with, for decades. The mention of Kurt Boehme reminds one of the story of how they recorded his Fafner for the Decca Solti / Siegfried. Placed in an isolation booth with headphones, his voice then played back on 20 loudspeakers into a large empty ballroom of the then existing Sofiensaal, picked up again by microphone at the other end, and then remixed into the orchestral fabric on the sound mixing desks.
Best Walkure, Act 1- Melchior under Bruno Walter....' a singing lesson'.

The Act I Walküre recording was released by Preiser in 1988. It is one of my favorite recordings of this act. Lorenz is in take no prisoners mode. It is very exciting.
