Can I be 'wicked' and ever so dare to mention the DG CDs of Maria Ewing's effort as :Lady Macbeth of Mtsensek ? Talking of orgasmic depictions in music, beside this Shostakovich, Strauss not only in Rosenkavalier but also gives 'a beaut explicit one' in his biographical work, Symhonia Domestica.

I was unaware that it was based on a true story; in fact I believe it was based on the short story "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District" by Nikolai Leskov, in which the author uses the common device of claiming to relay a true story which is in fact wholly his own invention.

But apparently very convincingly...

I have the DVD with Secunde and Ventris from Liceu/2002. I have seen it several times, and the singing and acting are unbeatable. The characters come to life, showing all human passion, desperation and wickedness. And under Anissimov, the orchesta does Shostakovich's score justice. Highly recommended.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I remember liking the DVD with Secunde a lot. As I recall, the singing was good and it's an effective minimal-ish staging that is appropriately desolate and depressing, and involves a lot of R-rated business happening under sheets, which is much creepier than actually seeing anything. Sorry to be vague!

The film of Katerna Ismailova (Shostakovitch's reworking of the opera to make it more acceptable to his Soviet overlords) with Vishnevskaya is absolutely essential viewing. Also, there was a telecast from the Royal Opera of the Richard Jones production (also with Westbroek). It is well worth tracking down a copy, but it's not available commercially. I hope the Royal Opera will release it on their DVD label.

there is a wonderful production with Eva Maria Westbroek as Katerina. Ventris is the tenor. Am I the only one who hears some Rysanek tones in her Sieglinde which can be seen on Youtube?

Does our reviewer (or anybody else) have any thoughts about DVD alternatives? I'm wondering about the one with Nadine Secunde as Katerina.
