A lot of what she is saying about Alagna in this article is misleading, untrue and ungenerous. They both have been singing with other partners for several years now - the joint engagements were in the minority. Angela has also sung with Filianoti a few times - another tenor who is handsome and younger than Roberto. Surprised she didn't mention him as well. She really seems mean-spirited towards Bobby which makes me pretty sure he kicked her out. His initial comments about her were fairly gallant and tactful while she seems determined to do targeted damage to him in her public statements. I am afraid there is no hope of reconciliation here but never say never with these two...

I love Anna. Sometimes (often?) she's sloppy, but this Salzburg performance was electric.

I also saw her January 2008 at Covent Garden, and she was devastating.

I find Anna's performance pretty spectacular and I am not a big fan of hers. The top is quite amazing.

Harry [#37], it's Le Monde - that's right, perhaps she's about to learn that it's a man's world, after all? - and I see the cover star is Patti Smith.

Now there's an interesting career trajectory.

Buster, making such a provocative statement comment (39#) , deserves being placed in the stocks and metered out the sternest punishment imaginable! Forced to listen to all the Vicar of Wakefield's choice of A list chorus singers past and present plus Kath Jerks, Paul Poop, and Sarah Brightsparks for the next 12 months 24/7.

And to think we have just had a parterre discussion on that other misfit Bartoli, the Baroque banshee. Incessant machine gun beat in her middle register, plus all that eye screwing and face contortion expression : throwing in wild cranium placed pitch notes for no rhyme or reason, except as camouflage netting, to disguise her shortcomings.

If one remembers back, she learned and honed this annoying affectation habit during her over expressive 'a la Rossini' concert presentation mannerisms 'to please audiences'. That expression of so much over the top animated physical effort to achieve the vocal results. The transient flocking Kulture Vultures 'dipping their passing toes - into a little baroque' are now mighty impressed. Cannot blame them really, they also would not have been familiar with this type of wave marketing : 'Go Pop... with Celicia's Selection of Period Drearys' - before, either.

Well Brittany is going around te World with her Circus tour, openly lip synching to her records...'doing live concerts' there will be a measure of tolerance elsewhere in the classical sphere for unpredictable antics, I suppose.

That ridiculous 'hot publicity shot' of A.G makes her look like she is 'resting' between 'exercising her tonsils engagements', waiting for the doorbell or the phone to ring.... Sure she is not pretending to morph the role of Lulu, 'a woman of the World' as she browses a mag called La Monde? No folks , it is just another put-on like everything else about her, is fake, fake, fake manufactured tripe P.R.. Can anyone name just one opera where they would prefer to listen to this A.G than someone else's version of it???!!! She is as exciting, as one, being asked to consume prickled herrings , left out of the fridge with the lid off for weeks! I cannot believe people actually take her seriously. Opera is certainly in a lot of trouble if they do.

Don't understimate the Decker Traviata, it's a modern production that actually works very well (I saw it in Amsterdam with Poplavskaya - who really wasn't too bad).

Where else could one ever get such fabulous exposure and free publicity than to front the news pages with petulance and nastiness?

This Rumanian broad is just coming across like a bad tempered but dumb bimbo tart, trying to hide her shortcomings. I couldn't care less, even if this promoted 'bag' was having an wild affair with a broomstick. She is showing she does not know the first thing about gaining real public respect, by pissing off managements. She should go back to the rightful abode for such creatures as herself.. As for genuine intelligence, the judgment or the ability to instinctively know how to musically foster her career.....I suspect socially she uses 'survival cunning' masquerading as charm. Whoever chosen, as useful to her at any given moment: is probably her latest confidante. Well this warbling Cinderella will find the clock is ticking....her pumpkin coach career is on a certain projectile journey . Just let us know, when it crashes into a brick wall.

queen amahelli -- it's from the Covent Garden Faust (David McVicar's staging). She's evoking that Manet painting of the barmaid. This is the production that also had Bryn Terfel in drag for the Walpurgisnacht. Horrible thought.

I adore her antics. I find them endlessly entertaining and hope she keeps them up. So she ruins her career. It's not my career, so why worry? There are lots of other sopranos from lots of other places waiting to take her place.

"VIXEN!"
A remake of the Russ Meyer 1968 classic, starring that glam gal of opera,
ANGELA GHEORGHIU

It finalluy came to me thanks to @5 Drammy's Drooling! A big shoutout of Grazie to him.

Seriously, after reading Corriere della Sera interview (@26 Manou) -- it all sounds a little darker and more serious -- Roberto sounding like a tipico testardo siciliano.

All I know is this: when I saw them sing Boheme together, about five years ago, he cracked. Not once, nor even twice, but THREE bloody times on their unison High C @ Act I's conclusion

. I mean, WTF do you talk about @ breakfast?

My only quarrel with JATM2063's comment in #4 is the totally unjustified use of the word "rather." She WAS, IS, and ALWAYS HAS BEEN. I almost never ENJOY watching a singer take a pratfall, but if this spoiled brat lands on her tush, I'll shout bravo.

I hate that one with Polpavskaya. At least Anna looked--I think--classy in the Decker production. Her hair didn't look like a fucking birds' nest and her dress was form-fitting. When I saw that, I wanted to do her, and I still do.

When I look at Poplavskaya, she just looks, well...skanky. I wouldn't do her, especially looking like that.

Whatever objections people may have to the Decker production, it doesn't destroy the music or Piave's libretto, and with Trebs and Villazon, it was dramatically exciting and compelling, if not always musically perfect. Because it's so sparse, it takes performers who are really committed actors in order to make it work. That Salzburg 2005 Traviata, for all its faults, was quite magical and electric.

And I don't think people will be scandalized by it the way they were by Bondy's Tosca, simply because anyone who has been paying attention to goings on in opera in the last five years will be aware if it, if only for Anna.

More evidence, as if any were needed, that opera singers should only open their mouths when singing (or giving blow jobs) and keep the commentary to those who have at least a resemblance to someone equipped with a brain.

I dunno...does this look like a scene from 'Belle de Jour' or Kitten with a whip', or 'Gorgeous Hussy', or WHAT?
