Andre Rau, angelagheorghiu.com

Why does La Cieca suspect that Angela Gheorghiu has, for the moment anyway, forgotten the denouement of Bizet’s opera?

“The problem is that Roberto can never accept that I want to perform with anyone else. I am like Carmen, you see, I need to be free to make my own decisions, and there are many tenors that I like to sing with – Jonas Kaufmann is one, Vittorio Grigolo another.”

L’evasiva continues her Rehabilitation Tour by charming the socks off Rupert Christiansen. [Telegraph]

I am really starting to think she has lost her marbles. She is running fast on the road that leads to career suicide.
Such a talent, but in such an odd package!

  • Lucky Pierre says:

oh la cieca, do you remember the winter olympics, that year when both katarina witt and the american challenger debi thomas skated to music by carmen? before the finals, debi tells a reporter “well, in my program, carmen doesn’t die but in hers, she does.” well, that didn’t help her at all, did it?

  • CruzSF says:

Katarina Witt won the gold that year, didn’t she?

  • jatm2063 says:

Is she charming? Maybe to Mr. Christainsen. It is, as Mr. Christiansen says, a very nice voice for a part of the Italian repertoire. The one thing I saw her in I liked very much. But in spite of his very gentle handling of her antics in the article, she comes off as rather a bitch, and he comes off as her spin doctor. Are they trying to drum up ticket sales for her performances in London I wonder?

Of course, Alagna doesn’t win charm awards for charm or professional congeniality either.

Ah well, so many of them are difficult in one way or another.

  • Drammy says:

She’s an absolute vixen in that picture. Drool-worthy. She and K[ow-ow!]fmann would make some very attractive opera-babies, hypothetically.

  • Clita del Toro says:

I think that the article was just fine. Christiansen tells the truth about how some people feel about the singer and relates some of her “problems”. I am sure she can be as charming as the next one when she wants to–when it suits herself. And who really knows what’s going on in a marriage–especially where two artists and business is involved?

Perhaps if attendance is lowish at her concert, she will clue in and behave herself in the future.

    LOL brava!

  • Satisfied says:

“Perhaps if attendance is lowish at her concert, she will clue in and behave herself in the future.”

    Doubtful.

    Also, suddenly reminded of something:

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t Gheorghiu’s Traviatas in March the last performances of the Zeffirelli production (at least according to Met futures)? If that is true, I’m surprised there isn’t a collective gasp of disappointment ringing from those still smarting over the new Tosca. (Those same individuals are likely to cringe over the new Decker production.)

  • kashania says:

This is like some trashy movie. I love how she points out two gorgeous tenors just to piss Roberto off. I suppose we’ll await his reply in another publication.

  • Noel Dahling says:

Satisfied: I don’t think anyone will be sad about the loss of the Trav. It was never regarded as a “classic Met Production” the way his Boheme and Tosca and Tuandot are. Same way with his Carmen thats being replaced this year. When that debuts in Dec(?) I doubt we will start hearing how great Zef’s was. That doesn’t mean they will like the Decker Production any better though.
