guleghina_turandot

At this point, Maria Guleghina is still listed as tonight’s Turandot at the Met. Any of the cher public attending this performance are encouraged to share news, reviews and scuttlebutt about what did or did not happen (broad enough for you?) here in the comments section.

Aloki, what a well-considered review. Thank you for sharing it.

Parterre posters specialize in severely criticizing imaginary performances by singers doing roles that are not in their repertoire.

Well, this is her from a year and a half ago, and it shows what she is capable of (or was) on a good night for her. Better than I expected.

  • Noel Dahling says:

    Trying this again…

Guleghina great last night? LOLOLOl Looks the Russian mafia (or is it Ukrainian?) is invading Parterre the same way they invaded Grand Tier last night.

I hope she does the HD, we can use the disc @ Halloween parties to entertain guests. A monstrosity. And the Ghoul never sang Gioconda? Thank heavens, I’m sure Ponchielli is resting more peacefully in his grave.

  • atomicwings says:

La Gioconda is not a verismo opera. It is from the school of scapigliatura.

  • dorion says:

ok, Gioconda is not verismo the same way Guleghina’s not a Turandot. I hope I don’t have to listen to her screechy, massively damaged voice ever again in the role.

  • manou says:

I always thought Gioconda was from the school of sciocchezza, which furnishes the plot of so many operas…

  • CruzSF says:

I’m finding that “scapigliatura” in music refers to only 3 operas.

From Grove Music: “Only three operas were produced by the scapigliati: Faccio’s I profughi fiamminghi (1863) to a libretto by Praga, Amleto (1865) by Faccio and Boito, and Boito’s emblematic Mefistofele (1868).”
