The Bondy choice was superb, and I recognized him right away! Kudos!
Wildly off-topic, but I just went to hear Michael in Salome, to see if it was bad as many have said…. She cancelled (which may answer the question), and a soprano I’d never heard named Molly Fillmore replaced her. Huge voice, easy in the high tessitura, incredibly clean, accurate singing. Great german. She has a very mezzoish quality to the sound, she was very small and svelte, very good dancer. The impact was sensational in the Jochanaan confrontations, here you had two singers that could really match each other. I’m at a bit of a loss why Grimsley doesn’t sing in New York, the viuce us more reminiscent of London everytime I hear him.
The overall impact of Fillmore in the role isn’t complete theatrically; it looks like it was a role debut, but incredibly impressive beginning. She falls into the “those who can sing it” for the moment. So with Lindstrom, it sounds like there is a number of lesser known singers who haven’t been burned out in this repertoire yet.

Agree wholeheartedly about Fillmore. She was ON tonight. She had some issues with audibility when Strauss gets…you know, Straussy, but on the whole it was a well-done, well-thoughout performance. The dance was not perfect, but apparently she had like three hours to learn it. As far as I can tell, it was a Role debut, though apparently she covered Mattila at the Met last year. A very impressive Salome on short notice. I’d like to see what she can do with the role with a little more preperation.
Oh, and about that “mezzoish” quality you talked about? Like Michael, Fillmore is a former Mezzo.
