Are you guys aware that Stemme HAS sung Brunhilde before? She subbed for Voigt in Siegfried last year after Debbie got cold feet(again). The one review I read was very positive, and I am pretty sure it wasn’t written by her mother.
Yes, I knew that she’d sung it before. But I haven’t heard her in the role yet.
I’m sure ms Stemme will make a terrific Brunnhilde. She’s too smart to sing beyond her limits, and she always has a great sense of the text.
Admittedly, she will probably be Behrens-great rather than Nilsson-great, but I’ll take that. In fact I have no choice, because I already have tickets for 2010…
mmmmmmmmm pusssy
Chrysothemis: I have my ticket for 2010 as well, so I’m hoping for the best. It’ll be my first live Walkure so in any way, it’ll be a great experience.
squirrel likes the purr of Katherine Jenkins’ … voice?
These Wagnerian voices exist. The problem is that we keep on comparing them to Nilsson – who really was unique. The word unique says it all. Right? Even Nilsson was criticised for being a little on the cold side. So everyone is bound to fail on at least one front. Personally, Varnay beats ‘em all as THE Bruennhilde to date (on disc at least) IMO.
mm sure, let’s say.
re:MrMyster- Speaking of Christine Brewer, did anyone catch that recital at Carnegie tonight? I’d love a report. Wanted to go myself but I was still entertaining Mama Squirrel.
mrmyster,
I remember listening to Stemme’s Brünnhilde from Vienna. There were moments when you’d wonder whether she was pushing her instrument beyond its limits, but overall, her involvement with the role is captivating. Her Isolde with Pappano is a testament to her artistry–crisp involvement with the text, gorgeous, dark and youthful voice, only sometimes threatening to give way under pressure. She is truly special. Her Senta with Ozawa from Wien was another role that I reveled in the house, as was her Elisabeth in that controversial production with the bull-headed nude. I’ve yet to see her Isolde live, but having listened to her on broadcasts and recordings, I feel like I already know how spectacular she could possibly be onstage. I would vote her as one of the strongest contenders for this prize.
