As if ‘groin-thrusts’ were written an integral part of the libretto rather than a directorial flourish for this particular production. “for over 100 years.” It takes two seconds to find out Cosi is two hundred nineteen-years old.
The writer is a fool.
It´s a VERY well known fact, Noel, that Così has been in the standard repertoire only for the past 100 years.
The romantic 19th century found it too darkly cynical to approve of it.

I said the writer is a fool based on the whole article, not just because of the “100 years” line. Reading between the lines, it just strikes me that the writer doesn’t know much about Cosi, let alone how nineteenth century audiences reacted to it. And anyway, you claim that Cosi has only been in the standard rep for 100 years, and the author of the article said “over 100 years”; so if you are right, you just made my point: she doesn’t know what she is talking about.:)
Well one of the the Australian ABC channels decided to televise ‘this Sharman directed monstrosity Cosi fan Tutte’ – live from the stage- last night.
Shit, it vindicates everything I said here recently, about the Opera Australia standards. The acting and singing was pathetic….. 2nd or 3 rate conservatoire standard. The ‘designer white’ staging, on the famously puny Sydney Opera house stage………..Gross Regie: watching ‘extras’ in muted army camouflage pattern ‘get -up’/ the two men returning dressed in snow glasses and strong primary colored snow gear/ the girls depicted as rich bitches – home and tired, from a designer boutique shipping trip with their white bags (of course!) in tow. Finally they run around, (stripped out of their intended white wedding dresses) in white silk petticoats and high heels! Everything about it and everybody in it, so decidedly ‘campy’, so self smitten with this amateurish display. I only want to know how much of the audience was wall papered to get that show of mild applause going; as the two comperes, gushed how there was going to be more operas televised. Shit! It always comes in waves, they say. And I did not mean Opera, per sec!
Sharman’s work is well known. Still reveling in being a over- the – hill provocateur’: Back in the 70’s he produced a King Lear: with vomiting ; and latex suits worn, opening to reveal their ’spaghetti -entrails’ falling out to accompany the violence. This Cosi needed a similar ‘dump’.
And it was done in F…..English too, for I suppose, the ignoramus’ present, willing to accept such performed shush, with the strands of Mozart’s music accompanying it. Judged together, I have heard better supermarket or elevator ’sound yak’.
