“All’alba, Vicar! Oh!”
“Why on earth was an American singer (admittedly a good one, James Creswell) imported to undertake the minimal challenge of Timur? ENO must try harder to cast British.” [Telegraph]

And why is the USA plagued by so many incompetent fucking Brits even permitted to infect opera administration and musical direction in America?i
jeez, what is going on over there? Nationwide inferiority complex?
Oh please let our beloved Vicar (as noted in the headline) have the perfect response!
Joseph Rouleau and Frederick Dalberg are rather out of date. And Forbes Robinson was entirely too good.
Didn’t see where else to place this..but this might be interesting….on , tonight…

CruzSF,
It’s an old, old mantra with certain British
critics. There was a similar comment in an ENO
Rigoletto review about a week or so ago “Why a North American singer”….
There is a strong “buy British” theme in some of the UK critics.
What an incredibly daft thing to say. Yet one more reason why I’m glad I don’t read the Telegraph, a newspaper that wishes it was 1908.
they are immitating balinese kecak costume, there is no chinese ever wearing checkers

If they were so independent of the U.S they would not feel the need to protest so much.
don’t forget the canadians do this as well.
it’s an international market; those little bit parts seem small, but are worth a lot when you consider the vastness of the talent pool.
Never mind that Mr. Creswell has a British agent and has been a member of the Komische Oper for several years now.
James is also a great guy. Good for him that he is making a name for himself.
This just goes to show that what Our Vicar is visiting upon us– perhaps too often to be consistently amusing? — has not vanished, as some here have claimed, from the British press.
Oh, because it is the British are the best: grizzling at the rest of the World. How many times have the rest of us have had to put up being inflected with 5th rate British artiste’? The number is mind boggling. Just go over the roll call, trotted out by the Vicar. You’re got it!
In that extremely damp, dull climate and brought up on a diet of stodgy food, how could healthy lungs of a potential singer develop any way? As they say , it is all about ‘real build quality’ Folks. AND the British don’t have It, and never did!
For anyone who is interested, here is the trailer for ENO’s new production of Turandot.

But what else do you expect from The Daily Torygraph? This is Britain’s most reactionary broadsheet. They still haven’t gotten over the fact that Britain lost it’s empire.
From a house which nurtured the late Richard van Allan — the finest Wurm on disc — this is a sore betrayal. Where are Howell and Sir John (whose Lear and Archie Rice the West End eagerly awaits)? Where are the younger men like Matthew Best and Commonwealth Artist Paul Whelan?
Or the renowned Gareme Broadent or Matthew Rose ??? If they wanted Timur typecasting (decrepit) Robert Lloyd is still around.
Vicar!oh qua, Vicar!oh la, Vicar!oh su, Vicar!oh giu….
che palle…..
I knew our dear Vicar wouldn’t let us down. Don’t ever stop, sir.
I tried hard to find the right way to mention Richard van Allan, but I just don’t have the knack, and shouldn’t try.
Com’ on Vicar I can remember Richard Van Allan doing a f…ked up voiceed Massenet Don Quixote
Lest tastelessness should reign supreme (nothing new here then) please note: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/dec/10/richard-van-allan-obituary
Cresswell sings wonderfully as Timur – nationalism is no basis on which to cast operas, whichever side of the Atlantic one might be on.
