Edo de Waart will conduct Der Rosenkavalier on October 13, 16, and 19 at the Met, replacing James Levine during his recuperation from herniated disc surgery.

Isn’t Edo de Waart the Dutchman who was married so many times there is a law in Holland named after him? I believe the law is relevant to government aid to divorced wives. After the passing of law, the Dutch government only has to subsidy child support and alimony to the first three or four wives…
Isn’t something like that? (i’m actually not joking, I heard a rumour about this…)

SilvestriWoman, the Rosenkavalier CD is wonderful, even though Lear is passed her prime.

Last time I heard Edo de Waart conduct Rosenkavalier he was fabulous. Telling the story in a way you almost needed no text to look at.

The cast he had was great too: Linda Watson, before all her heavy roles, as the most touching and noble Marschallin, an eager and very romantic Susan Graham, and the great, kitschy Eva Lind, just before she moved into lighter fare, hosting TV shows, and saving stray dogs from Wurst factories.

His Holland Festival performances of the opera with Frederica von Stade are legendary, and the CD made shortly afterwards remains one of my favorite versions of the opera – again, mostly because of the conducting (and von Stade, of course).

De Waart’s tenure in Amsterdam was short but great, and I miss him a lot. He was unhappy with the staging of some of the productions he was given, Lohengrin in particular (with Charlotte Margiono and Linda Watson).

It will be intersting to see if the fire is still there – lots of libido, that is for sure.

#14 – it sounds as if the Lyric Opera Orchestra is still performing without a contract. I haven’t heard about any canceled performances this week.

The Tosca poster outside the Met tonight had “TBA/Joseph Colaneri” in the conductor’s slot. (“TBA” was pasted over Levine’s name even though Levine did conduct one performance.) Does that mean we’re still expecting a mystery A-lister for the telecast?
