“merry” is not precisely the right word

And this is so not someone I expected to turn up at the Embassy Ball.

And now, the inevitable “this diva looks like that diva.”

Elena Obraztsova immediately won me over. Gorgeous! Thanks – is this from a complete movie? I need to see that.

Here’s a really great camera treatment of an unusual arrangement of singer, pianist and chorus in outdoor concert with some audience members in rapt attention, swooning, tailgating, dancing to the music and blowing car and bicycle horns as bravos. It’s also a really apparent case of a singer aware of the musical demands on her technique trying phrase by phrase to meet them head on after a long career, like a musician who is playing her vocal chords. She seems to be trying to achieve a very Callas-like sound in certain phrases. Lovely event, only in Europe!

oops – I meant boat horns.

Quanto: a clip from this year’s guest, the impeccably gowned Danielle de Niese, would have been a little more on topic.

Bit I like the lusty busty kind!

I just noticed that La Cieca has a new hairdo above that makes her look a little like Eve Queller.

“DYKE, YA KNOW” (or so Moscow sources assured me)

  • #2 Thanks quanto painy, I really like Nelly. I don’t think the voice was a really apt instrument for the heavier roles she sang, but I admire the multi-layered preparation and culture in the singing. Like her compatriot Marianna Nicolescu, she’s one of the few people who really understand what bel canto is all about. I especially like the wonderful Mary Stuart mad scene. Incidentally, I think the Preghiera which comes beforehand is one of his stronger inspirations, and the confession scene is on a different plane altogether, sublime!
