    Well, at least if he can’t sound like the Pav, at least he will be as big as him

    Okay, I take back everything I said in defense of this production. I just wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt, but now that I see it, it looks totally stupid. But Mattila sounds good to me…and that’s more important.

    @javier

    im curious how you think the production looks stupid.

    and i agree, I think mattila sounds good here. although her clip singing vissi d’arte had some problems at the end.

    i will be doing standing room at la prima and am excited to see either a beautiful production (in terms of the overall package working) or a stampede of the conservative fund donors of the met walking out and possibly some booing/heckling.

    Whoah, you call that a church? It looks more like a parking garage to me. Maybe it’s supposed to be a back room, y’know, where the altar boys tipple the blood of Jesus?

    Well..I’m just about as far from a “conservative fund donor” as ya get…but…judging from what I saw…and HEARD..on Thursday…I’d be booing , along with them….(in spirit, at least…)

  • CruzSF says:

    Do people actually boo and heckle at the Met? We don’t get much of that here in SF. As rude as it can seem on YouTube, at least the Italians have some passionate responses to opera. Here, if people like it, “brava!” and “bravo!” are called out during the standing ovations. If they don’t like it, they walk out silently at the first intermission.

    What an ugly, repulsive first act set this is. The singing sounds alright, though nothing extraordinary. But compared to the gorgeous production that Franco Zeffirelli did, this is vile. Puccini deserves better. We deserve better.

  • CruzSF says:

    rommie, I do hope that you’ll let us know Monday night your thoughts on the production.

    I’m sorry that I won’t be able to see the HD broadcast on Oct 10. I enjoy a good outrage, or pleasant surprise.

  • Trrill says:

    I’ve watched the video three times, and the only time Mattila sounded good to me was when I muted the audio. And the set looks like something from a community theatre—just on a larger stage.
