mish-measha

People often come up to me and say, La Cieca, “Who do you think will be the next Renée Fleming?” Well, all, right, that doesn’t actually happen often, or even rarely. In fact, it doesn’t happen at all. But be that as it may, La Cieca has found “the next Renée Fleming,” or at least someone who will be able to take up the slack in pop crossover when Fleming finally figures out how awful she sounds in this stuff. Again, it’s not like that’s going to happen, but, anyway, ladies and gentlemen, I give you Measha Brueggergosman.  To which I can only add, “Oh, honey!”

Joni actually makes the arrangement work…perhaps Measha simply needs another 40 years of two packs a day

Eglise Gutierez is already an acclaimed bel canto singer, but is she considered a coloratura soprano? I think there a difference between being a bel canto singer and just an excessive over ornamenting coloratura like Sills. I prefer Eglise Gutierez as Linda. Also, I don’t think Sills ever sang ALL of this opera, she only sang “O luce di questamina” in recitals as a vehicle to show of her coloratura. Eglise Gutierez is the real thing and I’m sure that her ornaments stay truer to Donizetti’s score.

    Borrrring!

  • Quanto Painy Fakor says:

And Beverly never sang LINDA complete because the opera is sooo booooring!

  • javier says:

Oh, I agree that the opera is boring, but I don’t know if that is the reason Sills never sang it. I think Roberto Devereux is boring too, but that didn’t stop Sills from doing that and possibly wrecking her voice.

I’ve never heard Gutierez live but all the clips
I’ve heard show a soprano with technical problems. the extreme top is separated and not integrated with the rest of her voice and as time goes on her attacks involving the very top are getting more and more slithery. Ugh.

She’s also very mushy with her diction, dull, dull vowels and unsounded consonants. All I’ve heard with her seems to me that she’s a singer
that needs a lot of additional study. For instance sometimes the trills form and sometimes they don’t.

I don’t have that much of a problem with her
ornaments, they could be showier but even what
she sings would sound showier if she didn’t sing it in such a dull way.

Measha Brueggergosman sounds more like Renay than Renay does.

Does Eglise Gutierez really think she’s fooling us by marked trill preps – ala 3 Tenors O sole mio)and then her fake trill? Embelishments should be written for the singer in question and no one else. There are certain things that cannot be copied without knowing how it came about altogether (i.e., Tebaldi wannabe AM)

She needs a new gay coach.

  • Quanto Painy Fakor says:

Yes, partially lovely and very very dull. I blame it on the teaching, the advice she receives, and a striving to make her mark without the benefit of really masterful coaching.

  • Hans Lick says:

Have not heard Brueggersroman in person; her “D’Oreste d’Ajace” is very pretty – why, you can hardly tell it’s supposed to be a woman losing her mind and hurling herself about the stage and off the island! (Behrens was quite the maddest of all Elettras, a trip and a half and a thrill, but Vaness could sing it well and still seem crazy.) I do not recognize the French aria, in which MB sounds quite attractive.

Gutierrez has an adorable natural instrument, the loveliest bel canto soprano I’ve encountered in many years, and she mostly sounds good here – but I agree with Richard she could use more training, or just more work with the right coach, calming down, studying HER instrument and what suits and doesn’t suit, what would best show it off. The thin, detached top is not appealing – nor is it good style. Perhaps the Bonynges could help her out.

Javier, you’re right: Sills’s O luce di quest’ anima was an over-frilly concert showpiece. Sutherland’s (from her debut recital, 1960), besides being flawless vocalism, was a superbly well-acted depiction of a girl happily in love.

And yes, Linda’s a damned dull opera. Seen it three times (Gruberova in Vienna!) and not eager to do so again. (Who sang it with OONY – Martile Rowland?)

Is it too soon to ask who the next Measha is?
