Thanks Monty - she is first touring Dubai with René Kollo:

http://www.travel-dubai.de/vip.html

In the Rosenkavalier she was very much helped by the excellent Amsterdam Concertgebouw accoustics, and by the great Edo de Waart.

Hawlata was the Ochs.

Well, Eva has 57 fans on Facebook and she has a busy schedule of Xmas and New Year's concerts coming up. And she is still only 44. Maybe Norma awaits soon!

Buster- that interests me about Eva Lind. Her recorded voice has always struck me as white, thin and tweety so I can't begin to imagine what she would have sounded like in an actual house.

I'm in danger of wearing out the Pieczonka/ Kirschlager/ Persson/ Hawlata Rosenkav DVD (aka 'spell THESE, sucker') mainly because Persson's Sophie is so wonderful. She produces the single most beautiful note I have ever heard on 'Ist wie ein gruss von HIMMel'

Buster, Rosenkavalier should always be a bit kitsch, surely. That is part of its appeal.

@73 There was something incredibly exciting about Eva Lind when she was in her prime. I saw her Sophie, with a young Susan Graham, and Linda Watson. It was kitsch, no doubt, but I loved it a lot.

Y'all know that at leaset ten times as difficult for women to deploy a public persona than it is for men ... right?

No, wait, why WOULD anyone here know that? ;)

This thread reached a grand zenith around #66, IMHO.

Nice conducting from Leinsdorf on that YouTube Kiri/Kathy Arabella duet.

Why was he allocated Verdi for RCA, though? He's not too good in the 1971 Leontyne 'Aida', which is also let down by being recorded through a fug (and, it has to be said) by some of Leontyne's latter-period mannerisms, though much of her singing is still glorious.

"As I pointed
out previously, it strikes me that Lucrezia Borgia is not well suited to
be a great role for Renee Fleming because the soprano is so "nice and
average." When Lucrezia was publicly insulted by a gang of young Italian
thugs, she rented a hall, catered a banquet, and poisoned her enemies.
When Fleming found herself in the same situation, well, she picked up the
phone and told her travel agent to get her out of town on the next plane."

James Jorden is a genius.

Kashania, I've seen the Kiri/Battle duet from that Arabella on YouTube, and seem to recall it being in rather good quality, so a video was made by somebody legit for some reason and it exists somewhere. I couldn't quite believe it when I found it, just imagining the potential for fireworks between those two (although Kiri's sense of decency is, I suspect, greater than Battle's).

She is incredibly sensitive with the press, and that is what I meant when I said curt and icy - she reacts rather badly if she doesn't like the line of questioning. A close friend of mine interviewed her in connection with the launch of her Foundation, and apparently Kiri was extremely unpleasant. However, another friend of mine studies singing with her, and says she has never been anything but completely lovely during their lessons.

I have an almost total devotion to and adoration of Dame Kiri. I'm applying to take part in the Solti Bel Canto Accademia at which she teaches, so perhaps I'll get to study with her for a few classes too if I get through.

Ach, mein lieber Buster, you should have seen Lucia Popp in the role. She wouldn't have left you cold. Even the little clips of her Arabella on YouTube are enough to bring a lump to the throat.

Also, the reactions to the David Fingleton book made her much more cautious. All the allegations that she is a lazy singer, prefers to shop etc. are taken from that book, which, by the way, is a great read. Much better than that Unsung Story book that came out later.

I did like the 1994 Thielemann Arabella a lot - my only time at the Met. She made Arabella sympathetic - no small feat. Dagmar Schellenberger could do that too, but all the other Arabella's I like a lot still leave me a little bit cold in the end.

@62 Thank You. Sensitive and defensive sounds right. That was sort of the point I was trying to make earlier. Sometimes with women in particular, early charges of stupidity can stick in one's psyche right through adulthood. She seems very nervous in that interview with Flicka, as though she is trying to control an image about which she was previously too careless. I think she must care about the foundation business, and I hope that she finds a new lease in it.

And @63, thank you. Perhaps I was over-invested in this thread (maybe I even projected a little), but part of me is still the little girl who heard her "Dove Sono" coming out of the radio and was transfixed. I had never heard singing like it.

"How great it would have been if the Met had videotaped Kiri’s 80s Arabella with Battle!!"

One of my most disappointing evenings ever at the Met She had zero chemistry with Weikl, with Battle ( who made her cry in rehearsal) and with Leinsdorf. Battle was good on her own isolated terms; otherwise the evening belonged to Dunn, Gramm and Gwendolyn Bradley.

Alexythymia, thank you for bringing so much balance to the argument and of course you are spot on- the statement concerned was probably taken completely out of context....still it was enough for some of the Raptors led by Queen Vinegar Tits herself, Dowager Duchess Harry to spring into action.
It is incredible that out of a singer's whole career- one single role that didn't suit her well, keeps being cited on here as though it was highly significant- it wasn't. I saw one of her Traviata's and while it clearly wasn't one of her best - it was no where near as bad as some have painted. It was certainly way past Miss Millo's Tosca- and almost anything done by Miss Giulgehna (sp). This whole thread is a load of piffle.

re: Kiri being "curt and icy" with the press

I think she can be extremely sensitive and defensive depending on who she's talking to.. in an interview on a sirius intermission last season with the non threatening M. Juntwait she was relaxed and warm and even opened up a bit about her divorce, without being asked (perhaps that was the key).

Again purely out of love of accuracy, what she said was "I have no one." Perfectly possible that she was referring to her time in NZ, to how much help she had going overseas, perfectly possible also was that she was taken out of context. What noone seems to have twigged to is that there is an element of snark in the reporting, which must presumably reflect Kiri's status Down Under.

ION the riffs on her name are symptomatic of the various ethnic/national slurs that crop up from time to time. You should be ashamed, but I guess the fact that you're not is kind of the whole point :-P

Krunoslav:(42#) Your list of New Zealand singers should have included that Medlyn creature, who I witnessed performing a 'horrid suck' of a Salome. To carefully get through the Final Scene, the bar by bar pacing of it 'was like wadding through 12 foot of sticky mud'. A quick head for the exit door performance. Malvina Major, who you mentioned I note, also another of those NZ designated 'Dame's'. Her excursion into Donezetti's Lucia (also best forgotten as a wet blanket).

As for dear self sacrificing St.Kiri, making those preposterous statements 'that she wasn't helped along in her career'(by many important musical figures)....... she shows even greater convenient memory loss than I assumed, together with her notorious 'slow ability to learn'. The woman is certainly not what one would call 'even ever so slightly intellectual' as an opera performer; though extra pretty maybe, once upon her time.

Oh Kiri - Queen of the Knickers: there is no need to snicker at some possible bright propositions during your extending period of 'towards retirement'.
A talent agency might come along and ask
"Do you want to appear in those (true!) current undies ads that recently ran on TV?"
Following on with:
"All you will be asked to do, is sing out the by line, that was used in the first set of ads that were ran. You can learn that, now surely?"

The by-line was: Look I am wearing 'No Knickers' (a brand!).

@43. For whatever reason, she used to be much sweeter toward the press. I vividly recall reading pieces that talked about how down-to-earth she was compared to the crossover persona. Then again, I was a starstruck 14-year-old and she was mah vocal role model ;-P

I think it's easy to forget sometimes on boards like this that it is very hard to be a singer and that anyone who is very gifted (what would you call that voice if not a gift?)--must struggle. If KTK's in a bad place or was then she has my sympathy.

Arabella may have been Kiri's most perfectly-suited role. Even those who find her Marschallin a bit cold find her Arabella to be an ideal fit. I like the Met video but it's from 1996 when she had lost some of the lustre and sheen on her high notes. How great it would have been if the Met had videotaped Kiri's 80s Arabella with Battle!!

@51 – Her operatic debut was as the Second Lady in Magic Flute.

Got to admit, the '69 Elena as her "debut" (evidently a Web-propagated factoid) sounded more than a little dubious. But meanwhile, for whatever it's worth, Met Opera Encyclopedia gives Carmen (Northern Opera, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1967) as her "professional debut."

And in the 40 years since that Donna del Lago she has never (to the best of my knowledge) sung any other bel canto opera on stage.

Granted, and apparently it seems even longer to her -- from her Opera on Lovers of some years ago (can't find publication date in book): "I have an antipathy to the tragic bel canto operas of Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti, although while a student, I did Donizetti's Anna Bolena ... This silently suffering character never inspired me. But I enjoyed doing Rossini's La Donna del Lago, though admittedly it feels like a century since I sang it."
