La Cieca hears that after two days of negotiations a “tentative agreement” has been reached between AGMA and the New York City Opera. Members of AGMA will vote on August 20 whether they choose to ratify the agreement as the negotiating committee has recommended. According to our source, AGMA has made “some concessions,” though apparently they are “better” than those made by 802.

Let’s hope for the best; for the sake of NYCO and the artists who depend on the contract.

Nice to finally hear some real GOOD news, in what has been a fairly gloomy Summer…

Sorry to ruin so many peoples breakfasts but there is a puff piece in tomorow’s Times about the (you guessed it) youthful and enthusiastic Mr. George Steel.

The numbers in the article seem somewhat confused. The $14.5M referenced in the 4th paragraph is correct as far as I know but in the next to last paragraph Tommassini says “City Opera had never raised much more than $40M per season.” I think he means the budget was around $40M in the Kellog/Thompson era if NYCO had been capable of raising $4OM a year we would have had no problem in the first place.

In addition, I had to smile at the first quote from Mr. Steel. “We are doing everything by the book.” In reference to the ongoing construction at the State theater. I guess Mr. Steel is a construction manager now and also, so it would seem from later paragraphs, an interior decorator and acoustics expert. So many accomplishments! I wonder when his restaurant “George-Georges” is opening?
