Undoubtedly a ripsnorter for the ages. First there was Fedora Barbieri, then Horne, now Podles. Sad thing, where is the successor (or successeuse) on the horiozon? An era may be drawing to a close.
If only the Met would have the grace and good sense to cast her, in these waning years of her career, in a starring part. Why couldn’t it have been Podles to sing the Orfeo?!? How about Erda in the next Ring, or a rip snorting Ulrica? One would think, after the reception she was given as La Cieca (no relation to our esteemed and chere doyenne) they’d wake up. People have such weird tics when hearing her voice, though. I’ve been seated twice next to persons unprepared for her sound and been subjected to their derisive tittering, involuntary sighs, and groans. No wonder there are about four contraltos left. Funny, in this age of enlightened counter-tenorism that the contralto voice is so little tolerated.
Besides Podles, has there been anyone since Horne who could excel in the lower range that Rossini actually wrote instead of the interpolated high notes he didn’t? How many performances/recordings have you heard, thinking, ‘For a Rossini pants role, the best notes of entire evening probably shouldn’t be the high B-flats.’
NICE NEW WEBSITE…
I like it. Really like it.
Fans of Podles will be happy to know that she will be singing Tancredi in Boston in the fall.
I just LOVE her too.
ps: the pic of LC is the best

Love Podles. She’s such a thrilling singer, even with her flaws.
What a guy!
