Don’t expect much in the way of art at NYCO for the next few seasons, but, on the bright side, George Steel probably has sufficient water-treading skills to avoid drowning. [NYT]

    brooklynpunk: really???

the editorial was entirely milquetoast. where was the call to arms? where were the suggestions on what to do about the problem? where was the, oh, i don’t know — OPINION???

new york should be a two-opera town … wow — how BOLD!!!

if their readers haven’t been made aware NYCO’s woes elsewhere, that editorial certainly wouldn’t have clued them into just how dire the situation actually is. my mom wanted to know what all the hoopla was after she read it: “sounds like they think Steel is going to turn things around … what are you so worried about?”

sorry, but i find it absolutely disheartening that that was all the urgency the paper of record can muster here.

    Whatever:

I have little “beef” against yoiur arguements…HOWEVER….

IT IS THE NEW YORK TIMES EDITORIAL PAGE…and rarely , (if ever),does the “ol lady” get all that passionate,or offers much in terms of concrete solutions, ABOUT ANYTHING…let alone a “call to arms”…I just don’t expect that, in “The Newspaper of Record” all that much..and I might be mellowing , in my dotage, in that I was just happy to see a mention of “support” for the continuation of an important aspect of cultural life…and, I would also guess that the editorial writers assume that those interested in the “back-story” already “know” the particulars…so no need, on the mast-head page , to re-hash it all over again..yes..it was sort of milque-toasty…, no doubt…but what other paper in the City has offered even a lame show of support?

I saw Mr. Steel, at the River-to-River Festival NYCO performance of “La Navaraisse”, last night, at the Wintergarten in The World Financial Center..and while I’m no Susan Baker, and won’t be smitten by a brief encounter (as she was , over dinner, (by Mortier)..I actually got “good vibes”–for whatever that’s worth, from his comments to the audience..and briefly speaking to him before the performance…

I’m just so heart-sick over the very real possibilities of the Company folding for good, that I take whatever positive signs of support for them as most welcome, these days……

brooklynpunk: no beef here, either — i thought about not responding further — but then i read today’s editorial on immigration reform. it has more force in the last sentence than the City Opera piece had from open to close. it recaps the issue’s current posture in Washington, points out a path forward, highlights the risks of failure, and calls for action. “all the more reason to urge the president and Congress forward on the path …”

by contrast, the NYCO editorial didn’t even adequately explain the current problem(s), let alone describe a path or “urge” anybody down it. pleh.

i take your point about any attention being welcome at this point, but what a waste of an opportunity …
