villazon out for rest of ’09
Rolando Villazón “should be well enough to return to the stage by the end of the year” after having surgery “to remove a cyst on his larynx” according to his concert management. Among the engagements Villazón is expected to cancel are Werther in Vienna and Munich, Nemorino in Los Angeles and Paris, and a new production of Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Met opening December 3. No, rosenkavalier, you are not.
No…
Rosenkavalier(60)
Well..”chacon au son gout”..I think he’s kinda sexy…eyebrows n ALL..but then again, I also find something compelling about Frida Kalho’s mug…and even that dame that was just one “Britain’s got Talent”…AND…I am VERY near-sighted..lol!
@#60 Rosenkavalier,
You are not the only one who finds Mr. Bean kind of ugly with his big eyebrows. In my opinion his big eyebrows make him look like a spider! eww!!
Dear 27….
(who was she sleeping with? Worst conductor at the Met ever…)
Young was one of Barenboim’s protogeés. Uh huh.
villazon lived in my building during one of his stints at the met; i would occasionally meet him in the lobby and we would exchange greetings; he was very sweet and pleasant to converse with; i thought him rather nice looking and far more attractive than he does in those truly ghastly publicity pictures that his publicity people and record company use; just my two cents
Glad there are tributes to Bea Arthur; she and Angela were so great together in Mame. Re: Villazon, if he’s smart (which hasn’t been in evidence in terms of his career decisions) he’ll take at least two years off (as others are suggesting) and then see if he can make some sort of comeback and then only in the lyric repertory. My hunch is he’ll be another operatic moth who sang to close to the flame. What he’s doing now should have been done in 2007 and, sadly, it may be too late to fully reconstruct his voice. Hope I’m wrong, though….
In reference to No. 60′s comment on Sr. Villazon’s appearance may I say that as a woman, influenced by and attracted to the Latin male type, I take one look at him and want to get to the nearest exit…not because he is “ugly” and especially because the esthetics of beauty have a highly subjective and personal bias, but because he is SCARY looking!
There is, to me, a whole lot going on under the surface, which is commonly translated into many viewers’ perception as “passion” which seems to me nothing more than a unbalanced and insecure individual, (reference is made to Villazon’s YouTube rendition of Federico’s Lament from L’Arlesiana as illustration), desperately grappling with himself and a recalcitrant vocal organism which was never tutored up to an acceptable standard, albeit perhaps this type of complex seems to be common to tenors far more than any other species of singer, e.g., Corelli, with his superior voice and talent.
It doesn’t surprise in the least that a cyst has been found, and it is a piteous fact indeed, but he should have been stopped from the trajectory he was following, LONG ago, by someone, somehow, somewhere. The august Mrs. John Claggart’s comment that this is not done so easily is quite so, but his problem is such an egregious one would imagine that somewhere the guy would have gotten the message. Maybe he didn’t want to listen. Probably.
I conjecture there was waaaaaay too much money to be made by and from Sr. Villazon, and the dream team of Villazon & Netrebko, Ltd. It interests me to think of whom her new partner in dreams will be….
I got to know Rolando since his Traviata debut.he is one of the nicest and most talented guys..(Next to him..I feel “calm.”)
I do hope he recovers..and in a way if the whole 2 yrs.problem related to the cyst rather than incorect technique..then maybe there is hope..BUT he should stay away from things like Don carlo..he is a Nemorino,an Alfredo..Even Rodolfo was a push i felt..
I love the guy..and hope he returns to us soon..Charlie
#68 Camille – I thought he was scarey when he hosted the Met quiz one Saturday. It was like he had done a fistful of uppers and was all a-buzz. Charming and sweet and all that…but….scarey!
