girl meets blog
Latest to join the ranks of classical music bloggers: intrepid Anne Midgette, whose Classical Beat offically launched today. Coverage includes la Midgette’s recent head-butt with Norman Lebrecht on the subject of the Wizard of Bayreuth.
that recent “head butt” on sound check was not that much of a head butt at all. it started off with the host asking “is wagner’s ring legit, or is it excessive?” then lebrecht and midgette bantered for a half an hour about stuff that most of wnyc’s listeners had no clue about. yawn.
good luck to Anne. i really miss her insightful reviews in the NYT.
Thread drift–but any London-posters had the chance to see/hear Martinu’s “Julietta” –which is being broadcast on the BBC3 right now?–it sounds fantastic..!!
Martinu: Julietta
Cast includes:
Rosalind Plowright (soprano)
Magdalena Kozena (mezzo-soprano)
William Burden (tenor)
Andreas Jaggi (tenor)
Frederic Goncalves (baritone)
BBC Singers
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Jiri Belohlavek (conductor)–he is my new IDOL…!!
…This work sounds like something that might suit the NEW NYCO very nicely…
I missed it Brooklynp – but all the reviews have been fantastic. The BBC is looking for a label to issue it on CD I hear. It’s Martinu’s most viable opera, I think. Richard Jones did a terrific, surreal production at the Paris Opera a few years ago.
Regina:
It was quite wonderful…and is availible on BBC3 “listen-again” for the next few days–I gotta figure out a way of taping it…very magical sounding work!
Anne Midgette blogging is good news for the opera world! Yay!
This will almost certainly find a home on an official release, as with Belohlavek’s DG Broucek. Particularly with Kozena leading.
[Martinu's Julietta] sounds like something that might suit the NEW NYCO very nicely…
I’ve been saying that for years. Or Santa Fe, or San Francisco, or really almost any of the more adventurous American opera companies. Unfortunately, Martinu is not the big cult composer here in the States that he seems to be in England, so I’d be surprised to see a production of his Julietta come to pass. Pity; it’s a lot better an opera than a lot of the turn-of-the-century works whose revival us queens at this site keep calling for…
The ROH have also done the “Greek Passion” a couple of times which was originally written for them but which they failed to produce back in the 50s. That is a craggier more austere work and still has a moving message about reconciliation.
I saw Julietta at ENO about 30 years ago and should appeal to anyone who likes the sound world of his symphonies, especially the shifting colours and harmonies of No 6.
I posted a link the other day with some some pics of the performance.

I missed that post…could you be so kind as to let me know where it is?–I am sorta hooked on this piece, right now..!
