For him, this must be considered a scathing review. He seems to echo the sentiment of many commenters who feel that Ms. Zimmerman doesn’t believe in the value of the piece, either musically or dramatically.

I wonder what JDF and ND thought of it.

  • lululady says:

It was ND’s stupid idea in the first place! Zimmerman told her she was going to set it in a village and she said – oh you musn’t do that! I can’t believe no one is blaming her. It is ENTIRELY her fault-she can’t sing this music and so she had to surround herself with distraction so she could get her money.

JDF was not happy and was very vocal about it during rehearsal. He wanted to focus the beautiful singing part. What a dummy! Everyone knows bel canto opera is not about beautiful singing.

I can’t wait to see this one at my local Magic Johnson multi-plex. With any luck this will be the one that make the board see what an asshole Gelb really is.

be glad he doesn’t ever take a bow some place, this horses ass.

The fact that the HOUSE itself, in the person of it’s intendant, GELB himself (!) had the unmitigated and really when you think of it, unprovoked gall to be insultingly dismissive of the plot, libretto. “this is the best we can do” apology we were downhill from there.

Hocking the Chagall’s, but we had a program for this horrid little exercise in arrogance. a total printed expensive program. For what?

To insult the opera, have your director say “We went too far, more or less”. Dessay’s is the culprit in all her anglo’s know nothing, french are supreme theater, they no nothing, alpine village would bore moi attitude.

Zimmerman was learning and after Lucia she wanted to do what I imagine Visconti had wanted to do, an old fashioned diva show in an alpine village beautifully coiffed. Why not? Because it would bore little Natalie’, beloved of whom?

Squally, inaccurate, horrid, and miscast. She can carry Lucia because of a desire to BE Lucia. Sick, fragile, destroyed. There all the white tone singing is acceptable, barely, but employable. NOW, Bellini is a different banquet all together. Yu have to have VOICE. and she has but not beautiful and it irritates me after a half hour.

Downplays the Juan Diego triumph. What is it with this freak for the times. ? Not good enough looking for him. although he did get a dashing. This guy doesn’t get the opera period and frankly, harshlky had an opportunity to rid himself o the whore to lkeep a job must please the john lable he is embroidering for himself. This was an insult, not clever, and the whole “creative” team except the tenor, was in on the murder.

Be glad this wasn’t Italy, people would have been chased home. After the dress rehearsal alone.

All publicity is GOOD publicity. Peter Gelb is a fucking genius.

Natalie pulled the same crap in Santa Fe when she sang it there several years ago, but the SF production wasn’t quite as ludicrous. It’s her fault as much as it is MZ’s.
