The staging you may like or not like (and La Cieca is sure you will not be shy about expressing your opinion), but, my goodness, what gorgeous singing from Tatiana Monogarova and Mariusz Kwiecien!

Surely better than the wimp (both character and voice) that Hampson portrayed.

Thought someone may be interested to see this in the cinema. It will be shown in April:

    Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky)
Performed at Opera de Paris Conducted by Alexander Vedernikov
    Directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov
Starring Tatiana Monogarova and Mariusz Kwiecien Eugene Onegin is based on the classic Russian novel in verse by Aleksandr Pushkin. The story concerns Eugene Onegin, a selfish hero who lives to regret rejecting a young woman’s love, and the careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend. “The Opera de Paris opens its season with a world-class guest: the Bolshoi from Moscow, with one of Tchaikovsky’s most popular works.”
    – La Croix, September 2008 “This production staged by Dmitri Tcherniakov is uncommonly powerful and intelligent” – Le Figaro, September 2008 Watch video clip here

    Two brief comments:

It’s kind of astonishing to hear two singers on an opera stage who can actually sing.

Pushkin’s poem is incredibly ironic in Russian, I’m told.
