Re: Domingo cover on Opera Snooze
Tenore finally discovers the joys of the very first complete,pain-free and successful constipation medication.
If you don’t care for the cover picture, just flip the magazine over. There’s a much better one there in the Rolex ad. Not to mention the dozen or so inside.
Sorry, did I say “dozen or so”? I just checked, and you get no less than 21 chances to gaze on Plácido’s face in this month’s Opera News. Admittedly, a lot of them are in an article about all his appearances on the cover of the magazine, but still…
I’ll pass
I believe that Birgit picked the first recipient herself. I am sure a proper explanation will be given by the foundation – most likely a statement from the late Birgit herself.
Placido has been an example in the business, through his talent and dedication. I also seem to recall reading that he has forgone payment from LAO this year in an effort to help them (I may be mistaken on this subject). I would not be surprised if he donated the entirety of the prize. He has plenty of money in his bank account, and aside from the obvious publicity, he is devoted enough to the art to realize that is enough money to keep cash-problem addled companies alive.
If Birgit had died a little later, perhaps the decision process would have been different. While everyone seems to be convinced the next winner will also be a singer, I think it will be a company. That money will be much needed by many companies in countries that do not get sufficient help from their government: USA, UK, now Italy… And if the purpose of the foundation is to promote the art, perhaps it will recognize that helping an opera house stay open is the best way to do that.
…and now we hear rumors that Gelb is to get the boot and Placido is to take over the Met! Can somebody else be allowed to make some money in this biz, please?!
Yes, because he’s been doing such a spectacular bi-coastal job, I’m sure he can find a few hours a week to run the Met.
