Actually, DEVEREUX is a fine music drama when properly cast (i.e. with an Elisabetta and Roberto who can act and sing properly their parts, which you assuredly didn’t hear).
Costello is slightly better at acting then Valenti, but the stage command needed for this kind of part is not his, nor does it seem likely to be. And the words are not given much weight.
Listen to Domingo and also Alexander opposite Sills – the latter tenor was not a *physical* actor, but he phrases it consummately. For a star part, hire a star, not a promising KIND OF nice looking guy…

And the description fits 100%. I would help him with that baton. That smile would make the polar ice melt.
Valenti is good looking, but too tall and long-horse faced for my taste. And his cheeks are sunken, he looks too old for his age. But I would certainly love to see him having something “in” jonas kaufmann.
Signore Valenti,
DITCH the BITCH and make the SWITCH !
