The Acts grow ever more Unnatural as La Cieca introduces the fourth and final segment of Adriana Lecouvreur. Later in the show, we hear Magda Olivero making a debut at an age when most people are ready to retire!

Re: #29 – Does anyone know which other artists chose not to return to America rather than pay the back taxes or who had to wait several years until a settlement was made? I’ve only heard about Nilsson, but obviously there were more.

  • Arianna a Nasso says:

And does anyone know what American productions lost Nilsson between spring 1975 and her return? I’ve wondered about the Met’s 76-77 Walkuere (sung by Hunter) and 77-78 Frau (Schroeder Feinen), San Francisco’s 1976 Frau (Schroeder Feinen) & Walkuere (Knie) and 1978 Elektra (Mastilovic), and Chicago’s 1975 Elektra (Schroeder Feinen). And for what was Nilsson scheduled at the Met in 75-76? Thanks for any insights!

    AAN @31,

I heard that Freni had tax problems with the IRS.
She didn’t appear at the Met between 1968-1983 although she did appear in the US in 1976 with La Scala (DC) and the Paris Opera (NYC) both those tours were in connection with the US bicentennial.
Freni also appeared in NY with Karajan in a Verdi
Requiem @ 1976. I think she also sang with LOC in the late 70s . So in her case it took another few years after she was able to return to the US to return to the Met. not sure why.

    Klingsor:

Thank you for that beautiful story.

  • Sanford says:

    LVPO,
you know damn well that someone here will manage to take offence no matter what you say. Going back and forth serves non purpose except to egg them on.

  • armerjacquino says:

What precisely are you implying, Sanford? I simply asked what was to be gained by the information that Olivero behaved like a bitch.

I don’t see how that counts as ‘managing to take offence’ and I don’t see that anyone need be discouraged from ‘egging me on’.

  • LVPO says:

Hardly “back & Forth” Sanford, but point taken.
I have said all I wanted to say anyway. FINE.

BTW whilst I “got you”: I once asked you a question on another tread, but I think you missd it (or maybe you just ignored me. Either’d fine):

Are you a tenor? (I think you are) If so, what kind?

  • LVPO says:

    Armerjaquino:

I didnt correct you ion the previous reply but that’s twice now:

I have NEVER used the word BITCH! Nor did I use any other words in its place, intended as a euphemism.

Though italian I am well proficient in the english language and I know how to write what I mean, mean what I say and know the exact words to use to express it.

    Which I did.

    Sanford:

sorry…Does that count as “Back & Forth”?? ooops.

  • armerjacquino says:

I didn’t say you did, LVPO, the word was mine- because it seemed the best noun for the behaviour you describe. Sheesh.

Back and forth, back and forth…

  • LVPO says:

    LOL….:)
