they have so much in common it’s a phenomenon

La Cieca is perhaps a little slow on the uptake these days. Your dimwitted doyenne only just noticed (when it was pointed out to her, that is) that the conductor for Anna Netrebko’s return to the stage at the Mariinsky on January 14 was Keri-Lynn Wilson. Ms. Wilson is of course not only a distinguished maestro in her own right, but, by the oddest sort of coincidence, related by marriage to an impresario with whose theater Ms. Netrebko’s career is very closely entwined. Small, La Cieca marvels, and funny! And fine?

Great news!! Hire her as “music director” of the Met Opera..and let her share her husband’s salary. I’m sure that would be saving the Met Opera lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Maybe I’m slow on the uptake. Is there some impropriety in this? Seems that’s implied in the comment. The music director at the Maryinsky was until recently the principal guest conductor of that other theater. So what?
Maestra Wilson has long been associated with some major houses long before Gelb took over the MET. Although, She certainly has not been hampered by his connections. She gave a solid reading of La Fanciulla at L’Opera de Montreal and that with the soprano being a last minute replacement. She is a far cry above some of the assistant conductors to whom they used to give performances.
she is a horse faced shrew that beats time nothing more. No imagination and trading on her husbands guilt. He HOVERS over Angela and Anya for a reason. To get a break from the UGLIES at home. This isn’t even a fifth rate conductor. Directing the banda backstage would be an accomplishment for her,
Yes, Mein Gott, a conductor’s attractiveness is the first thing I look for to determine talent.
Are we five years old here or can we have an actual discussion about Ms. Wilson’s conducting ability?
My guess is Trouble in Tahiti. Just before they go to the movies at the final curtain.
I saw her conduct a fine performance of Madama Butterfly in Verona. It isn’t an ideal house, and she really got a lot of color from the orchestra – I was impressed.
Was she scheduled the whole time, or is this a change from the original plan? Can someone check in the season/subscription brochure?
She has also been contracted to lead performances at Washington National Opera- TURANDOT I think. Of course, there’s never any nepotism connected with WNO…

So why is it Mr. Gelb’s first thing when casting an opera? BOTH are hideous and lack soul.
“Are we five years old here or can we have an actual discussion about Ms. Wilson’s conducting ability?”
Os that the Papal WE or are YOU serious? I find her ugly, and her music not fairly enough to fill a thimble and were she not married to HIM, no one would care.
Yes, and Wilson will be conducting an opera gala at the Munich Festival in July starring Gheorghiu. Continue sniping!
hmmm … why all this vitriol all of a sudden … she hasn’t been hired by the MET, hence no obvious sign of nepotism through her husband’s position … and if anything, she did a fine job conducting Vanessa last season in the OTHER HOUSE ACROSS THE PLAZA!
She conducted the most flaccid Aida I sat through (Rome Opera)
Wherever Anna goes the Gelbs go! They’re all in bed together!
In all honestly ms. wilson is a fine conductor, i saw in her in action at LA’s Rondine.
“Connected with major houses” “Distinguished maestro”
Oh, really? Name the major houses she has conducted at. Covent Garden? The MET? Vienna? La Scala? Lyric Opera of Chicago? Paris? San Francisco?
Name the major orchestras she has conducted. Berlin? London Symphony? Vienna Phil? New York Phil? BSO? CSO? Concertgebouw?
I didn’t think so.
It just helps to be well-connected. It’s probably a little frustrating to Mme Gelb that her MET debut might have to take a while longer until she has more international credentials. They really should offer courses in successful quid pro quo in undergraduate scool. At least she has talent!!!
Why the Gypsy pic? I need coffee, I don’t get the joke.
Small world… isn’t it!
Oh, “Gypsy.” I thought it was R & J.
Ms. Wilson did not conduct the City Opera Vanessa. That was Anne Manson.
Mrs. Gelb is connected by her agent Mario Dradi. The deal is: they get her important work, and Gelb gives their clients important work at the Met.
