rock the regie

In our previous Regie quiz, the eponymous character who managed to avoid being photographed (and, thus the title of the opera) was “La Calisto” by dear old Francesco Cavalli. The production was from the Landestheater Linz, directed by Matthias Davids.

An opera from a more recent century, after the jump.

Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. Just because there are some hard hats in the 2nd picture.

Has Sally Potter gotten around to LE JONGLEUR DE NOTRE DAME?

There’s a bust of the Bard in Act II, and while in regie that need not mean anything, let us suppose that the director (whoever) is slipping, and this IS an opera based on a Shakespeare play (not knowing offhand of one based on his life: “My Second-Best Bedmate” perhaps). It’s not Otello or Falstaff (we can tell from the lack of makeup and belly) and Macbeth doesn’t seem to fit much of what we are shown, so though picture 2 would suit Hamlet, I’m going with my instincts: It’s either Le Marchand de Venise or Das Liebesverbot. Unless it’s Pacini’s Il Gioventu d’Enrico V.
